“I don’t know about an entire act. Let’s see what’s in the box when we get home.” I nod toward my car parked at the far end of the lot. “We’re parked over there.”

Will takes the bags out of my hands, and before I can complain, he’s walking toward my car. I take Hunter’s free hand, and Izzy stays close as we follow.

“I know a few magic tricks myself.” Will talks over his shoulder as he strides through the lot.

“Can you levitate a person?” Hunter asks with an excited beam.

“What great magician can’t?” Will says, approaching the car.

I hit the unlock button, and Will stands near the hatchback. Hunter and Izzy get in the backseat while I lift the tailgate for Will.

As he puts the bags in the car, Hunter leans over the backseat and talks to Will. “Can you show me how to levitate someone?”

“No,” I answer for Will. “Officer Bronson has a lot to do.”

“You’re a cop?” Izzy asks, seeming impressed. She, too, is now in the backseat with her brother, on her knees and peering out the trunk. “Have you ever shot someone?”

“Izzy!” I scold, but Will places a hand on my arm. For a moment, I enjoy the feeling of his hand on my skin—until I realize I shouldn’t like it there. I move away.

“It’s okay. She can ask. Unfortunately, Isabella, I have fired my weapon.”

“Have you killed someone?” she asks.

Will looks at me briefly, and his brows furrow.

I answer for him. “Officer Bronson saved a lot of lives not too long ago. He even took a bullet in the chest and is recently back from medical leave. He’s a hero.”

“Wow.” Hunter gapes.

“That’s so cool,” Izzy says, wide-eyed. It’s the most engaged I’ve seen her in anything in months.

“It’s just my job,” Will says.

His modesty is endearing. As is his charm. Then, I remember he’s engaged, and I snap out of the Bronson voodoo.

“As you can see, Officer Bronson is very busy with saving lives and wedding planning and can’t be teaching little boys how to levitate.”

I close the tailgate and walk toward the driver’s side, but Will is blocking me.

“Melissa, we need to talk.”

“Did you follow me here?” I ask incredulously.

“No. Absolutely not. I have to buy a gift for my nephew, and you’re here. It feels like fate. Melissa, I’ve been dying to talk to you.”

I try to walk around him to the left, but he moves in sync and doesn’t let me pass.

“I’ll have those estimates ready for you by the end of the week.”

“I haven’t been able to sleep.”

“The turnaround time at Lavish Events can be as long as three weeks.”

“There are things I have to tell you, and I don’t want to do this in front of your kids. Can we meet sometime for coffee?” he asks as I try to pass him on the right.

“I’m still waiting for one of the venues to get back to me. As soon as they do, I’ll email the numbers right over to you.”

“Melissa, stop.”
