“Even Hunter? He needs Mr. Snuggles.”

“A cop showed up and brought the bear. Said not to worry and you’d be back at the house before midnight. You’re not in trouble with the law, are you?”

“Absolutely not. There was a small problem with the house alarm.”

“Whose number is this?”

“A friend. I left my phone in the car. Go to sleep, and I’ll be home very soon.” I say my good-byes, and William ends the call.

“I have to call Tara to drive me to my car after I have Tyler clear this misunderstanding.”

“Nope.” He places the phone in his pocket and holds his hand out for the AirPod.

“I only get one phone call?”

“Technically, you’re entitled to three.”

“Then, give me my three! If every detainee is entitled to three phone calls, then I want mine.”

“You’re not a detainee,” he says matter-of-factly.

“Then, why am I here? Why areyouhere? And why aren’t you wearing a uniform?”

He leans back in the chair with his legs spread wide and his hands on the tops of his thighs. He looks like he could lounge here all night.

“I was home, enjoying a quiet evening when my police scanner alerted me of a potential breaking and entering on Lowerington Drive. I remembered the address as your ex-husband’s.”

“You remember that from taking down his address for his statement?”

He taps his temple. “Photographic memory, remember?”

I roll my eyes. “You went to Tyler’s house when you were off duty to save him?”

“The call said a woman, approximately five foot six with brassy blonde hair, was caught snooping around the house for what the neighbors assumed was a key.”

My jaw drops. “They said my hair was brassy?”

He smirks. “No. I added that to rile you up. Actually, they said a drop-dead gorgeous woman was found at the scene.”

“Really?”

“No.”

“You’re infuriating!” Launching from my seat, I shoot daggers at him and then walk up to the bars to declare my side of the story. “I went to Tyler’s house because Hunter had left Mr. Snuggles there and he can’t sleep without that bear. I told him to let it go, but then he brought up my mom, and honestly, it was like a piercing to my heart because I hadn’t even known that Hunter remembered her. He was so young when she died. But he brought her up, and I realized his attachment to that ball of fur was because it was a piece of her. I’d never thought of that before, so when he said it, my entire heart exploded and shattered at the same time. I got in the car, determined to get my little boy’s bear. Would you believe Tyler changed the damn locks?”

“Probably thought someone might use the old key to break in.”

“I wasn’t breaking in! It was my house once. My kids’ house now. I was just getting his bear. I know he kept a key outside somewhere. It used to be under a planter, but the bastard moved it.”

“A neighbor called and said someone suspicious was lurking in the dark.”

“I found the damn key. He put it in the grill. How generic.”

“Certainly not as cryptic as the planter.”

I growl at him, and he raises his brows.

“I let myself inside, and then the house alarm went off.”
