Poppy sips her wine and smiles. “This shit is so good.”

“For eight hundred dollars, it better be good,” I say before sipping my fruity beverage. “I need to tell you something.”

“Go on.”

“Atlas came by my place last night.”

Her eyes light up like a Christmas tree, and she rests her elbows on the table. “Did you two fuck?”

“No. That’s what I want to talk to you about. He says he wants to be friends with benefits. Actually, friends and sleep together. Then he kissed me…”

She grins like the Cheshire cat. “See, I knew it. It’s fate. You two are meant to be together.”

“You’ve already had too much to drink,” I joke.

“Maybe. Or I’m happy to see that someone else’s love life is going better than mine.”

The spark I felt between Atlas and I slingers beneath my skin and I don’t know what it was, but it was there, unless I imagined it. After he left, I used my B.O.B. to relieve the sexual tension I felt with him.

“I don’t want to ruin my career if I sleep with him.”

“You won’t. Damn what people say about you.”

“You sound like him.”

“He’s right. Live your life for yourself. You’re going to make it in the industry even if you don’t sleep with him.” She bats her eyelashes. “It’s so cute, you two had a date at home. You two would make the cutest babies.”

“It wasn’t a date.”

“Babe, you ate dinner, talked, then he kissed you afterward—it was a date.” She tears pieces off the napkin in her hand and pushes them to the side. Something is wrong with her.

“Do you have feelings for him?”

I shake my head. “No. It’s pure lust.”

She angles her head to the side. “Are you sure?”

“I’m a thousand percent sure I don’t like him. Atlas doesn’t have any feelings for me, which is why the arrangement will work.”

She shakes her head as if she doesn’t believe me.

The winery is dead but it doesn’t matter, I haven’t been shit-faced in a long time. I order a few shots and down them. When the room spins in circles, I know I’m tipsy.

“Can I tell you something and not be judged for it?” Poppy asks.

I knew something was wrong. “Spill the tea.”

“I had sex with Jasper before I decided to date Link again.”

My mouth hangs open. “W-what?”

“I told Jasper I’m going back to my ex, and we’re getting married. It was the best sex I ever had. Those bloggers weren’t lying about his dick size either.” She exhales. “We talked for hours. He made me feel important and wanted.”

“Don’t marry Link for his money, Poppy. You’ll end up unhappy.”

Her eyes water, and she uses her thumb to wipe her tears. “I wanted to marry him because of the money at first so I can open doors for my father, but I love Link. We’ve been dating since college, and I don’t want to throw it all away.”

There is no reason for her to marry someone who treats her like shit, and she deserves so much more. We’re quiet, but the sound of the music drowns out my thoughts.
