“You’re projecting your insecurities onto Atlas. You’re wrong. He’s avoiding you because he doesn’t know what to do. From the start, you have been pushing him away and maybe he thinks you don’t love him.”

I sit next to her, bringing my legs back to my chest and resting my chin on my knees.

“How do I fix this?”

“If you go to Atlas and tell him how you feel, then he’ll understand.”

“What if he rejects me?”

“Then he’s not the one.” She grabs the pitcher from the coffee table and pours me a tall glass of tea.

“I suspect Atlas wants to know you love him to boost his ego, because God knows he has the biggest ego on the planet. But it’s not going to hurt you if you tell him. Every man wants their ego boosted. Think about it, we lie to them about their dicks being big, even when we know it’s not. We tell them their dicks won’t fit inside, knowing it’s a lie. And we lie about how many people we have been with to make ourselves look innocent. So, boost his ego, it’s the right thing to do. I doubt he will reject you for loving him. And it’s okay for you to love someone, give yourself permission to be happy.”

I run my hand through my hair and stare at the ceiling. “Okay, I’ll go to him. I’ll speak to him before work tomorrow.”

“Good. You know what’s good about actually dating Atlas?” She wiggles her eyebrows.

“What?”

“You don’t have to lie about his dick being big to boost his ego because we all know he doesn’t have a big ego for no apparent reason.”

I go to my office and peer at Atlas as he’s on the phone with someone. I am going to tell him how I feel and see how he responds. And like Poppy said, he probably wants to hear me say it. I’m putting myself out there, and if he rejects me? Oh well, then I’ll end the relationship. I study his muscles through his fine suit. My heart catches in my throat, and my hands shake like I have the jitters.

With my head held high, I stride into his office, my iPad in hand. He turns to look at me, his facial expression showing his frustration, but I won’t let that defer me from my mission. My eyes snag onto two brown boxes next to the empty glass desk.

“Send it to my executive assistant’s email address. It’ll be ready for her.”

He sees me, taps the Bluetooth, and stands up, tucking his thick fingers into his pockets. We stare at each other for a bit longer, and my pulse damn nearly jumps out of my skin.

“You’ve been avoiding me,” I state, folding my arms across my chest.

He leans his butt against the desk and crosses his Italian loafers over the other.

He doesn’t respond as his eyes travel from my head down to my shoes, and a frown forms at the corner of his mouth.

“Talk to me. What’s going on with us? You’ve been distant since the trip.”

“Lake, I—”

“Don’t bullshit me. I’m a big girl and I can handle the truth. Tell me what’s going on.”

“I’m moving to London.” His tone is nonchalant, but his shoulders are rigid.

I rub the side of my temple. “Wait. What?”

The tension between us is so thick, I can cut it with a knife. My chest tightens, and my heart drops to the cream carpet.

He’s silent for several moments as if he’s trying to recollect his thoughts, then he sighs. “I fixed the financial problems here at Risqué, so I’m going to London to work as the CEO of Naked, and I need to go.”

I swallow around the lump in my throat. “How long have you known?”

“For a while.”

“Be more specific. When you asked me to be your girlfriend?”

“Yes.”

My anger burns in my chest, and I cock my eyebrow. “Longer than that? When you started pursuing me?”
