Once the doors swoosh open, I head to my office and pack up my stuff. The place reminds me too much of Atlas, I can’t bear it anymore. My eyes sting with tears but I suck in a breath and swallow the lump forming in my throat. Once I’m finished packing up, I set my things by the door and head into Declan’s office.

“Did you receive my resignation letter?” I ask.

His eyes peer up from the computer screen and he nods. “It’s such a shame because, according to Atlas, you were a good executive assistant.”

Hearing him say his name reminds me he’s gone and not coming back.

“Thanks. If you have any questions about Risqué, shoot me an email,” I say, before turning on my heel and heading to Jasper’s office.

When I open the glass door, Ember’s eyes study me from head to toe, then a smile spreads across her face.

“Lake?” Surprise paints her face. “I love the new look.”

I smile. “Thanks.”

“What is this glow I see?”

“What do you mean?”

“You’re different. I don’t know what it is but there is something about you. Like you don’t have an ‘I don’t give a fuck’ attitude.”

I giggle. “When you’re the butt of rumors in the city and at work, it changes you.”

“Are you okay?” she asks, standing up and giving me an awkward hug.

“You mean about the breakup?”

She nods. “I’m sorry, really. People can be vicious.”

I don’t want to talk about Atlas, I’m trying to move on with my life and forget about him. “Is Jasper in his office?”

“Yeah, he’s on the phone in a meeting, but it’s almost over.”

Several minutes later, Jasper beckons me to his office, and I perch on the black couch across from him. He eyes me up and down as he folds his arms, wrinkling up his crisp shirt.

“What brings you to my office?”

“I need a favor. I can’t ask Atlas to do it, so I need your help.”

“What is it?”

“I’m going away for a month, but I might be putting in applications for other jobs to be on their creative teams. Can I use you as a reference and can you write a recommendation letter for me?”

“Are you sure? You’re a great asset to our company. I know shit hit the fan with you and Atlas, but we could use you on the creative team.”

“I’m sure, Jasper. I haven’t been surer in my life.”

“Where are you going?”

“Kauai, Hawaii. I can’t stay at the company because everything reminds me ofhim.”

“I understand and, of course, I will.”

“Thank you,” I say, standing up from the seat.

“For what it’s worth, Atlas is making the biggest mistake of his life letting you go. He’s a damn fool, if you ask me.”

“Um… thanks.”
