Ken’s eyebrows climb up his forehead. “Are you sure?”
“I haven’t been more sure in my life.”
I hit the End button on the Zoom meeting and sit back in my chair. Snatching my phone from the dresser, I dial Jasper’s number.
“What’s going on?” he asks.
“I’m selling my portion of Risqué to you.”
“What?” He sounds shocked. “Your company is worth thirty billion dollars.”
“You’re my best friend, and I’m choosing to sell it to you. If you don’t want it, I’ll find someone who will.”
“Are you high?”
“No. Don’t worry, I’m still going to be a billionaire, so I’ll still be able to hang with you,” I joke.
“Your father is going to have your head if you sell his empire.” I hear movement in the background, then a door slams.
“Fuck him.”
I hear the sound of him taking a piss, and several moments later, I hear the toilet flush. “Why the change of heart?”
“It’s not my dream anymore. I can’t be a good husband to Lake if I’m a workaholic, and being with her was always the goal.”
I hear the sink water running.
“Have you spoken to her?”
I shake my head as if he can see me. “She won’t give me the time of day.”
“Don’t give up.”
“I won’t. I’ll spend the rest of my life here in Hawaii until she’s ready to be with me.”
Lake
I need to call Poppy and tell her what’s going on, so I grab my phone from my pocket and glance at the time. She should be getting off work now, so I dial her number, and she picks up on the fourth ring.
“How is it on the island?”
“It’s nice. But that’s not what I’m calling you about.”
She sighs. “What’s wrong?”
“Atlas is here. He moved next door to me.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Yeah, and he wants me back. He’s been running with me every morning, then he asks me for five minutes of my time.”
She doesn’t say anything, and I hear cars honking in the background before it dawns on me that she isn’t bashing him like she normally does when I mention his name.
“You haven’t said two words. Are you okay?”
“Lake, I have to confess something.”
“What?”
