“We’ll wait another five or ten years,” Atlas says.

“Agreed. But when we do have children, I want us to be married.” I thrust my fingers through his hair.

“I have something to confess.”

My back straightens. “What is it?”

“I’ve been in love with you for a while now. I fell in love with you when you were nineteen years old. I didn’t know it was love then because I didn’t think I was capable of it. I never admitted to myself because I didn’t want to believe it. Because if I believed it, I would have to face the fact that you’re not in love with me.”

He slides a leather journal to me. Slowly, I flip it open, and there is a drawn picture of a pair of eyes. In the caption, it reads:

The first thing I noticed about Lake’s eyes is they’re hazel and almond-shaped. They’re the eyes of an angel.

I flip to the next page, and the next, and it’s different pictures of my body parts and descriptions of what makes me unique and pretty. He even drew me as an angel. When I flip to the last page, it’s a picture of my hands, a wedding band on my ring finger. I read the description.

I plan to propose to her when we come back from Kauai. She will say yes.

My mouth goes dry, and my palms become sweaty, so I wipe them on my jacket.

He stands up from the metal chair with me in his arms before setting me down, then he leans forward and his lips brush against my forehead. “It has always been you, Boots. There is no one I love as much as I love you.” He pulls out a velvet box, removes a gigantic diamond, and slides it onto my finger.

“We’re getting married next year, so start planning the wedding.” He meshes his mouth with mine and I melt like butter. Everything about Atlas is amazing, and I don’t know what I would do without him. Every day, I’ve been learning how to love myself even more and on the days I can’t love myself, he loves me even harder. I never thought someone would love me, and I never thought I would ever find love. After my heartache, I didn’t think I was worthy of love, but now I know that I deserve love and I am loveable.

Sometimes we tell ourselves lies and we believe them. When I worked for Atlas, I didn’t expect to fall in love with him, and I didn’t expect him to be so caring and loving. He came along and defrosted my heart, teaching me how to love myself. He accepted me for me, even when I didn’t accept myself.

“You’re an arrogant asshole. Why would you think I want to marry you so soon?” I playfully swat his chest.

“It’s me. Of course you want to marry me. I have pretty hair, a good personality, and I know how to work my big dick and my tongue.”

I let out a loud laugh.

He brushes his mouth against my forehead. “You better call a wedding planner tomorrow. You can have whatever wedding you like.”

I assess the tall skyscrapers. “The skyline is beautiful.”

He wiggles his eyebrows. “Not as beautiful as me.” He grabs my hands and kisses it. “But I never thought I would find someone who’s more beautiful than me.”

“Is that so?”

He nods. “I love you, beautiful.”

“I love you, too.”

“She said yes!” Poppy screams at the top of her lungs before she rushes toward me, yanking me into her arms. “Surprise, this is your engagement party.” She punches Atlas in the arm. “See, I told you she was going to say yes.”

Atlas’s mother, Alice, squeezes me tight. “Welcome to the family,”

Jasper, Trent, Ember, Joy, and a few people I don’t recognize congratulate me on the engagement. Atlas yanks me over his shoulder, slaps my ass, and carries me to the lush living room. He kisses me again, while everyone cheers.

The broken girl gets the prince, after all.
