Dani shook her head. “No, I don’t need anything like that. Gabriel has issues with commitment. He needs to work those out before we can even think about our relationship or the club.”
Tessa tilted her head. “I see. Have you always known this, or is it something new?”
“I’ve known it for a while.”
“All right, I’ll let it be. But honestly, if you need any help, let us know. We have our evil ways.”

Friday evening, Dani sat in the reception area with Ralph. After her lunch with Tessa on Monday, she’d had phone calls from Sierra and Crystal. Then yesterday, Lara had chatted with her at the café.
Allyson had called her this morning to make sure she was coming to the club tonight. She was thinking of staying tonight. She might not play, but she wanted to be around her friends.
“Dani, can I see you for a minute, please?” Max was standing next to her.
“I can handle things. Shut down and talk with Max,” Ralph offered.
“Okay.” Her stomach churned as she shut down her computer. What did Max want? She followed him down the hall and into the temporary classroom.
“Please stop looking like a scolded puppy.” Max gestured for her to take a seat.
“Sorry, Master Max.” Dani sat and folded her hands into her lap.
“Drop the Master.” Max sat down across from her with his knees almost touching hers. “You know you can tell me anything, right?”
“Yes, Mas…Max.”
“Okay. Are you happy here, Dani?”
“Yes, of course I am.” What was he asking? Did she seem that unhappy?
“There is no ‘of course’ about it. May I?” He gestured to her hands, and she nodded. Max picked up her hands in his. “I want to be sure of your well-being.”
“I’m fine. Gabriel and I have some issues to work out, but it has nothing to do with the club.”
“Good.” He squeezed her hands. “I’m very pleased with your work with Ralph.”
“Do I hear abut?”
Max shook his head. “No buts. As you know, I’m expanding the club, and with that, comes more work and security.”
Dani nodded; Tessa had told her about it.
“I didn’t want to assume you’d keep working at the desk with Ralph.”
“Oh. I don’t mind if you want me to continue.”
“That means you might be at the desk with Ralph later or even by yourself for a while. I’m having new security cameras installed, and Ralph’s attention will be on them at times.”
“I can handle it.” She could.
“Yes, you can. There’s going to be a new computer system as well. So with all that, I wanted you to know that what you’re doing has become a paid position.”
Dani opened her mouth, but Max just stared at her, and she stayed quiet.
“Don’t argue, but because I suspect you’re like others here, the payment will be in the form of your yearly dues and nightly costs.”
“That’s very generous of you.” It was. The yearly dues were high.
