What the fuck happened? Why is he acting this way?

Sophia messages me and asks me if I’m okay. Biting my lip, I shrug, then hurriedly text her.

Me: I fucked him. Guess he got what he wanted, and now, I mean nothing to him.

Sophia: Wait, what? That doesn’t make any sense. I see the way he looks at you. The way he’s hyper-focused on you.

Me: Did you see him look right through me during role call?

Sophia: I noticed he looked at you the same way he does other students. Don’t overreact, though. You said this happened in his office?

Me: Yes.

Sophia: Maybe someone said something to him and he’s trying to be discreet.

Me: I’ve thought of that. I guess I just hoped he’d give me a sign. I thought the sex was super hot.

Sophia: Deep breaths. Let’s see how class goes and we’ll go from there.

Me: Thanks for being the voice of reason

Evan begins lecturing, and I take notes. He asks several questions during his lecture, and I raise my hand, but he calls on other students even though his gaze looks right through me, as though I’m invisible.

I slump in my chair, staring out the window. I don’t understand what has happened.

“We’re going to do something different this class period. I want you to form small groups of no more than four students. I have video clips I’ve uploaded to the portal. After watching them, answer the questions on the screen as a group.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “I will let you choose your groups for this assignment. Any questions?”

When no one raises their hands, he says, “And go.”

“Obviously, I want you as my partner,” Sophia begins. “What about—”

“Hey.” A guy with dirty blond hair stands next to a guy with brown hair. “We sit a couple of rows behind you. We were hoping you’d want to form a group with us.”

I look at Sophia and shrug. At this point, I don’t really care. I want the class to be over so I can escape Evan. Now that he’s ignoring me, the dress feels tainted. I want it off.

“Sure. Have a seat.”

The blond guy sits beside me while the brunette sits beside Sophia.

“I’m Bennett Davis,” the blond guy says with an easygoing smile. “Lexi, right?”

I nod, flashing him a smile. “Yes, you’re correct.”

“Nice to meet you.” He shifts, his leg bumping mine. The aroma of his cologne wafts through my nose as I move away from him slightly. “Sorry.” He smiles at me.

Although I’m slightly uncomfortable, Bennett comes across as being sincere. “It’s okay.”

Looking at the screen, I jot down the questions in my notebook. “Okay, I’m ready. Let’s watch the first clip.”

I press the space bar, and we begin watching it. Bennett leans over my shoulder, and I tense, my spine stiffening. Feeling eyes upon us, I look up to see Evan glowering at Bennett and me.

Oh sure. You spend most of the class pretending I don’t exist until another guy shows me attention.

I look away, my eyes returning to the screen, pretending to watch the video. But I’m acutely aware of Evan’s eyes watching us closely.

When the first clip ends, we discuss the video and answer the questions. The hair on my skin rises as Evan comes over and stands near us, his arms crossed over his chest. I ignore him, working to summarize everyone’s thoughts into one unified yet concise answer.

“How about this?” I read back what I’ve written. “Did I miss anything?”
