Bennett raises his brows. “Impressive, Lexi. I like the way you wrote that.” He looks at Sophia and the guy beside her named Braydon.

Evan snorts. My spine stiffens as I flick my eyes over to him. He’s staring at Bennett with disdain. His eyes slide to mine, and I hurriedly look away, taking a deep breath.

“Beautiful and intelligent. What a combination.” Bennett grins. “Are you single?”

Evan claps his hands together. “Okay, everyone. We’ll finish this assignment during the next class.”

Everyone begins gathering their belongings, but Bennett doesn’t move. “Well, are you?”

I chew on my lip, debating how to answer his question. When my eyes meet Evan’s, I decide to do something I wouldn’t ordinarily do. “Yes. I’m single.”

Bennett’s grin is huge. “Well, damn. I wasn’t expecting that. I’d love to take you to dinner. Or if that’s too forward, the campus coffee shop.” He stands, running a hand through his hair. “Hell, even the library.”

I can’t help but laugh. “I guess this dress is a huge hit.”

He glances down at it, then back to my eyes. “You look stunning in it. But I noticed you on the first day of class.” His tone is low and sincere. I should feel excitement rather than terrible for leading him on.

“Oh.” My cheeks heat from embarrassment. “Umm… Thank you.” I put my class materials away, biting my lip. I’m uncomfortable and unsure what to say. I hear my phone beep with a text, but I ignore it.

Bennett chuckles. “You look even more beautiful when you’re embarrassed. Where are you heading, Lexi?”

My eyes lift, meeting Bennett’s baby blue eyes. “Home. These shoes hurt my feet.”

“Are you walking home in those?” Bennett looks horrified, and I instantly shake my head.

“God, no. Talk about torture.” I shiver, throwing my backpack over my shoulder. “I drove. I have a pair of flip-flops in the car I will change into to drive home.”

He shrugs his backpack on. “That’s a relief.” He looks so adorably nervous, my heart goes out to him. “How about I walk you there.”

I hear Sophia cough loudly behind me, but I don’t have time to turn before Evan’s curt, angry voice cuts into our conversation.

“MissWhitmore. Can I see you a moment?” He glowers at me, causing my anger to bubble to the surface.

“It’s Miss Morgan.” I glare at him for a beat. “And I have somewhere I need to be.”

“Miss Morgan-Whitmore. I need to see you.Now.”

Bennett’s eyes widen as he looks from Evan to me and then back to Evan.

“No. It can wait.” I grab Bennett’s arm, pissed at Evan’s behavior. How dare that asshole think he can order me around after fucking me like that, then ignore me.“Walk me to my car?” I give Bennett a flirtatious smile.

“Sure.” We take two steps forward, but Evan moves in front of us, blocking our path. His hands are curled into fists at his sides as he fumes.

Sophia walks up to Evan, putting her hand on his arm. “I think you and Lexi need a cooling off period. Let her go.”

Evan glares at Sophia. “No.”

I turn, tugging Bennett in the opposite direction. “Let’s take the scenic route.”

Bennett gives me a confused look when he falls in step beside me. “Are you sure? Our professor looks pissed.”

I glance over my shoulder, watching him glower as Sophia tries to soothe him. “He’s a dick who gets pissed off over shit he starts.” Tossing him a smug smile, I continue walking. “Don’t worry about him.”

Bennett looks doubtful. “O-Okay.”

Once in the hallway, I drop my hand from his arm, exhaling nervously. Things feel awkward with Bennett like I'm doing something wrong. Guilt eats at me as I dart him looks, searching for something to say. “How’s classes going for you so far?”

The tension eases from his face as he starts discussing his classes. I’m only listening with half an ear, worried that Evan will make a scene.
