Shit. Why did I say that?

He chuckles, the sound doing something to my insides. Goosebumps cover my exposed skin despite the hot, humid Texas sun blaring down on us. Moisture floods my panties when Evan licks his bottom lip, his stare boring into mine, pulling back my carefully constructed walls like a hand parting a set of curtains. I’ve worked so hard building a fortress around myself so very few can get close to my fragile heart.

Yet my stepbrother, the complicated man who looks at me with hunger heavy in his smoky irises as though he wants to devour me one moment and the next, narrows his eyes, his features tightening and jaw ticking like I’m his worst enemy, is peering into the depths of my soul.

God, no. Stop this.

Don’t let him in.

He’s dangerous.

If Evan finds your weaknesses, he’ll do nothing but exploit them, turning your life into a living hell.

But I can’t. I’m pinned beneath the weight of his gaze. Electricity courses through my skin everywhere his skin touches mine. My palms turn into an inferno from the heat of his chest beneath them.

The smirk curving his lips is both arrogant and sexy as sin. He arches one dark brow before dipping his head. “I’ll bet your pussy is soaked right now.”

A gasp leaves my lips.

His lips curve into a smug smile, victory lining his face.

Recovering quickly, my eyes narrow. “From you?” I yank my hands away from him like his body disgusts me. “Hardly. You might do it for a lot of women, but not for me. I’m drier than the Sahara Desert.”

Evan laughs, shaking his head. Amusement is all over his face, but his eyes burn with a challenge. “I don’t believe that for a minute.”

He steps back, and I instantly feel cold despite the hot late August Texas heat. “If our parents weren’t pulling into the parking lot, my fingers would be inside you. I guarantee your juices would be running down my hand.”

His dirty words leave me lightheaded and weak from desire while he calmly turns toward our parents, his fake I’m-the-perfect-son smile on his face. He raises his hand in greeting as my shaky legs barely carry me to the trunk of my car. Pressing the button on my key fob, I reach for my suitcase.

Evan’s scent assaults my senses again. His lips hover by the shell of my ear. “When you bend over in those short jean shorts, you expose entirely too much of those decadent legs and ass.” I regret turning my head to look at him. The way he leers at me, flames of desire shooting from his eyes, lights my body on fire. The dirty words he growls make my panties explode. “Fuck, I’d like to pound you from behind and make you scream my name.”

R.I.P. to my poor panties.

My cheeks flame, my body overheating so much from his words that the redness spread down my body.

“Good grief, Lexi.” My mom’s high-pitched voice diverts my attention, reprimanding me within three minutes of laying eyes on me, as usual. “Don’t you believe in wearing sunscreen anymore? Look at the redness of your skin. Haven’t I taught you to protect yourself better?”

I hoist a suitcase from my trunk, scowling at Evan as he pulls three of them to carry inside. Evan’s eyes latch onto my face, his smirk widening.

Smug motherfucker.

Rolling my eyes, I paste a fake smile on my lips as I turn to face her. “It’s fine, Mom. It’s just red from being outdoors and expending energy. It’ll go away as soon as I’m inside.”

“I’d like to expend some of your energy,” Evan whispers in my ear. I swat him away, watching my mom open her purse, digging around for sunscreen.

“I put some on earlier, Mom. I know how to protect my skin.”

Too badI can’t protect my wayward emotions from Evan. There’s no damn sunscreen for that.Better yet, some type of repellent to keep him away from me.

Grabbing my purse and slinging it over my shoulder, I extend the handle of my suitcase and take off toward the front door, running away from my mom’s sunscreen and the magnetic force field of Evan freaking Whitmore.

As I hurry toward the door, the delivery truck pulls up. Preston immediately heads toward it, barking orders at the driver. As much as I’m thrilled to have a brand-new bedroom suite, I know it will be a miserable experience fighting with my mom and Preston.

To make matters worse, Evan’s sneakers pound against the concrete sidewalk, catching up to me. “You can run, but you can’t hide, Lexi. There’snoescaping me.”

My eyes cut to his, a shiver racing down my spine from his words.

“Iwillfind out how wet that pussy is.” His eyes undress me as they trail down my black V-neck tee and my white jean shorts. When they lock back on mine, they contain a threat and a promise. “It’s useless to fight me. Ialwaysget what I want.”
