“You know what? Why don’t you come by Sunday morning? No point dragging them out before bedtime.”

Hopefully, my parents could watch the girls. They lived closer than Tiffany anyway, and I had one last job before easing my workload.

“Sounds good.”

“What are your plans on Sunday?”

“I booked a spa day at Grace’s.”

“Sounds like the perfect girl’s day.”

I could see Tiffany smiling out of the corner of my eye.

We toured the area Tristan had planned out for the new department. Tiffany’s talent had earned her company prestige for a reason. They’d designed the space with thought and care: gray and white elements with a touch of silver added modern sleekness. The pillow-filled couches, cushioned seats, and an area with giant white beanbags near the windows added coziness.

“So?”

“Where do I sign?”

She held out a tablet, and I swept my finger across the screen. She loosened her hold on the device, and I caught the screen in my hands, which brought my face down to hers. She went in for my mouth, but I turned my head sideways, and her lips smacked over my cheek.

I stood tall and stepped back. “Tiffany, I hope I didn’t give you the wrong idea.”

“What wrong idea is that? That you’re a wonderful father, a great businessman, and an exquisite lover? That I want you, James? I thought my intention was clear.”

Her hands drifted underneath my suit and around my torso. I stepped back again, putting some space between us.

“You’d better update your intention if you want to work with me again.”

“If we were a family again, would it be so bad? Don’t you miss waking up next to me?”

Truth was, I did miss a woman’s warm body in my bed, but it wasn’t Tiffany’s, and I wasn’t revisiting a conversation we’d had in the past. There was no return to that road.

“I prefer our current co-parenting arrangement. I have a meeting before the hospital, Tiff.”

“It’s that woman we drove, isn’t it? Laura? I saw how you looked at her.”

I ignored her comment, as it was none of her business.

“I’ll see you this weekend. The girls will have their backpacks ready.” I lowered my hands to her shoulders and steered her to the exit. “You know the way out.”

“Good luck at the hospital today, James,” she said as I walked away.

“Thanks, Tiff.”

I continued down the hall to Tristan’s office and found him fidgeting with a pair of fluffy cuffs. He had it bad for the new hire at Silver Securities.

“Who are those for?”

“Don’t fucking ask. Allie sent these as a gift, and I’m not sure whether they’re for her or me. You’re early.”

“I signed off on the furniture, and I’m curious whether you’ll finally let me know what you’re doing with the space.”

“Human trafficking division. Unfortunately, the demand is out there. Are you ready for the auction?”

“I’m always ready. Are you?”

“No. We’ll meet with Allie this weekend. I told her I’m bringing someone single.”
