“What for?”

“So she can bring an available date for you. I got it right, didn’t I?”

Technically, I was single, but I also wasn’t looking for a date unless it was Laura. But if Allie was bringing a friend, chances were great it would be her.

“Sure, why not? It should be fun. You said she has a kid?”

“A boy.”

“And the father?”

“Not in the picture at the moment.”

Perfect.

“Allie said they’re figuring things out.”

I chuckled.Figuring things out.

“Looking forward to it, my cousin, but I’m sure that’s not why you asked me to join you here.”

I plopped down on the couch in his office and stretched my legs out in front. My head felt heavy, and a sudden wave of exhaustion passed through my body. I cranked my neck sideways and forced myself to sit straight up.

“You’re right. Thanks for coming. I know you have your appointment today.”

“In exactly an hour. What can I do for you?”

“I have my hands full with Kendra’s case, and I need your help to find an investigator for the new department. Someone with experience but trainable, who would make a suitable partner for Allie.”

“So it’s official? You’re going to hire her?”

“She’s perfect for the job. I’ll surprise her as soon as we get Kendra. So? You up for it?”

“You’re making me responsible for hiring a new investigator?”

“That’s right.”

“Nothing good in recruiting?”

“Personal acquaintances always work best. I can’t ask my brother because his hands are full with Kendra. Gabe is in Austria. Hunter’s not old enough, and our fathers barely retired.”

“All right. I’ll do it. Anything else?”

“How are my nieces? And how is it possible none of us are a match for Kensi?”

“I don’t know, but at least I am. I just need a few more tests. Speaking of which, I’d better get going.”

We gave each other a brotherly hug, and George, the company’s chauffeur, gave me a ride to the hospital.

The bone marrow biopsy wasn’t painful, but definitely uncomfortable—and definitely worth it. I dressed, and Dr. Hippo came into the room, smiling.

“I have good news for you, Mr. Silver.”

“You can’t have my results that quick, can you?”

“No, we’ll have yours in a few weeks; but if we’re lucky, we won’t have to wait too long for Kensi’s surgery. We’ve done a few preliminary tests, but we may have found a matching donor.”

“You’re serious?”
