“Grandpa wants to take us fishing.”

“That sounds like fun.”

“When are you coming home? I made a new sword and armor with grandpa.”

“I’ll be there in the afternoon, princess. How’s your baby sister?”

“Laila’s tummy is good.”

“And yours?”

“Huwts a little.”

“We’ll make sure you’re all better soon, okay, baby?”

“Okay, Daddy. I love you.”

“I love you more.”

We hung up, and I merged onto the freeway.

“You’re a wonderful dad,” Laura sighed, and I glanced sideways. She held a dreamy look in her eyes.

“You’re a good mom, too.”

She laughed.“You don’t even know me.”

“I know you take care of your son with no one’s help. That’s pretty big.”

“Why would Laila’s tummy hurt again?”

“She has an autoimmune disease, but it’s manageable right now.”

“Right. You mentioned that before. It’s the worst when you want to help them and you don’t know how. They cry and cry because they can’t verbalize what’s wrong.”

“Before Laila’s diagnosis, we thought we were doing something wrong, but it wasn’t us. Thank God for Dr. Hippo.”

“He’s great, isn’t he?” she said.

“You’ve met?”

“He treated Ozzy’s sprained wrist in the emergency department.”

“How is he doing?”

“Much better. Thank you.”

“And you? When can I see you again?”

“How about when I come into work?”

“You’ll do it?”

She nodded, and I punched through the air with delight.

“Were you really at the hospital snooping?”

“That, and I found my kryptonite.”
