“I thought I was your kryptonite.”

I grinned and took the exit off the interstate.

“You are. I can’t donate my liver to Kensi because I have hairy cell leukemia.”

“Leukemia?”

“Apparently it’s the good kind.”

“I don’t thinkleukemiaandgood kindbelong in the same sentence. Are you starting treatment?”

“There’s no need to kill my immune system because there’s not enough leukemia inside me to kill. But I thought I would give my girl a liver, and I can’t.”

“At least Dr. Hippo found a donor for Kensi.”

I yawned and turned onto her street. “How did you know Dr. Hippo found a donor?”

A gulp jerked her chin, and she forced a smile.

“I ran into Tiffany earlier. She told me the good news.”

Her eyes shifted sideways, and I assumed Dr. Hippo had already called Kensi’s mother. I parked in front of Laura’s apartment, turned off the car, and hurried around to the passenger’s side. Laura took my offered hand, and I helped her out. We walked up the steps to her door.

“Thank you. I’d invite you in—”

“Don’t, because I’d have to decline. I have late work tonight and an early morning with Kensi.”

She lowered her head, and I touched her chin to lift her eyes back to mine. “But I can’t wait to see you again. I want to make sure you’re aware what happened in my office wasn’t a one-time thing.”

She bit her lip.

“We’re both busy, but I will make the time for us. I want to make the time for us.”

She rolled her lips inward to contain a smile, and I lowered my mouth to hers, sealing my promise. She tasted like orange and chocolates.

“I’ll see you soon,” I said against her lips with reluctance.

“See you soon.”

I waited until she locked the door behind her and left home, feeling like I was leaving my future behind.

CHAPTER 7

LAURA

Idressed Foxy in his Sunday best and straightened his bowtie.

“Guess where we’re going today?”

He rolled his plastic car along the kitchen counter, oblivious to the fact that he was about to meet his grandmother. I looked him over once more, combing my fingers through his hair.

“You’re going to see your new grandmother, and hopefully she won’t kill Mommy.”

The text from Teresa Silver last Friday had hit me like a train, and I’d snuck out of James’s office before he woke. I wasn’t sure how she knew about Foxy, but I had my suspicions. James’s mother had invited us to her house, and if I were lucky, I’d leave in one piece. I could only pray she’d give me enough time to explain and tell James on my own.

I buckled Foxy into his car seat and drove to Oyster Cove Bay. Twenty minutes later, the driveway curved three times before I came to a stop in front of a mansion. James lived next door. I’d been in his driveway before, but never inside. I took a deep breath, removed Foxy from the car, set him on the ground, and took his hand.

“Come on, baby. Let’s make a good impression.”
