I swallowed past the rough spot in my throat. “Kensi?”

“She’s doing well. I can’t stay long, but I’ve brought backup. Emma’s nearby because Allie’s still in the hospital.”

“How is she doing?”

“She took a bullet, but they saved Kendra.”

“And James?”

“He’s busy with Kensi and Laila. I think you have a few quiet days ahead.”

My phone dinged on the side table.

“It’s James. He says Kensi’s recovering well. He’s thanking me for the daisies I sent to Kensi, along with a fox stuffy. He says that was cute, and he can’t wait to see me.”

“You see? Everything will work out.”

I typed a quick reply about how happy I was about Kensi and how I couldn’t wait to see him.

I turned my head Teresa’s way. “Thank you for sending the flowers and the toy.”

“Oh, that’s not on me. That’s on Emma.”

“Hi, I’m Emma.” The spunky teenager waved from the corner chair, and I realized I was in a private room. Vases of flowers lined the windowsill and dresser.

“I know who you are, Ems. You babysit my son.”

“I thought I’d introduce myself again in case you had a concussion.”

“I had a liver transplant, not a concussion. Thank you for sending the gifts.”

“You’re welcome. You’re lucky your best friend survived her gunshot. No one’s even asking about you.”

Wonderful.

“Don’t worry. I’m a great secret keeper.”

“No one’s asking? Really?”

“James is with Kensi, and Allie’s sleeping. You don’t have many people, do you?”

“You sound like a rehab nurse from hell.”

“Thanks. It’s okay if you don’t have people. We’re family, so I can be your people. I changed your chart to show appendicitis, just in case someone checks.”

“What if the nurse checks?”

“You can leave the nurses to me. They love me here, and the chocolates and donuts I leave at their station. I’ve got to go to school now, but text me if you need anything.”

I felt like I’d landed in a hospital from heaven. I’d never had this much support in my life. My head flew up just before Emma left.

“Wait—if you’re both here, where is Foxy?”

“He’s with Grandpa Jake, who’s showing him the donkeys right about now. They’re expanding the chicken coop this afternoon, but I can bring him by after his nap. See ya.” Emma waved and left.

I settled back in the bed. “You have donkeys and chickens?”

“Just chickens. Foxy loves farm animals.”
