I smiled. “He does. Thank you, Teresa. Thank you for everything.”

“You’re welcome. You can trust James as much as you trust Emma and me.”

I pulled my hand across my eyes, clearing the crust and fog. “I know. As soon as I heal and I’m back at work, I’ll tell him.”

She drew her head back quickly. “How soon are you planning to go?”

“It depends on how long it takes to heal from appendicitis. I can’t tell James about this surgery.”

“Why not?”

“It’s not the way I want to get him back. Besides, I didn’t do this for him. I did it for Kensi.”

She covered my hand where the butterfly needle connected to an IV and leaned in. “There’s nothing wrong with saying you did it for them both. You’re a hero. You saved my granddaughter’s life and gave me a grandson.”

I returned her kind smile. “You have a gift of lifting people up, Teresa.”

“Glad to hear it’s working.”

A light knock sounded on the door, and my mom’s head popped inside. My father pushed in from behind her.

“Mom, Dad. What are you doing here?”

Teresa stood up from her seat. “Alice, Tom. It’s nice to see you again.”

“Teresa?”

“I was checking in on my granddaughter and saw Laura through the window. She’s recovering well from her surgery. I should get going. Take care, Laura.”

“Thank you, Teresa.” I waved her goodbye, and she left.

My mother took the seat beside my bed. “You donated a piece of your liver?”

“The chart says I had an appendectomy.”

“I know what the chart says… and what the hospital records say. Which is another enigma I can’t understand.”

“Damn it! It’s because I want the donation to be anonymous. That’s all. I can’t believe you checked the hospital records. That’s a crime.”

“Doesn’t apply when you’re trying to reach stubborn family members and they don’t answer your calls,” my father groaned. “What’s going on, Laura? Why are you ostracizing us?”

“I wasn’t trying to,” I whispered.

I wasn’t about to tell my parents they were grandparents from a hospital bed, but the time for the truth was drawing near.

“We should have dinner together when I get better. I’ll bring dessert.”

My mother smiled. “That would be nice. I’m taking a leave of absence in a week, so I’ll have more time, I promise. Who’s helping you recover?”

“Don’t worry. I’ve got this. They’ll release me in a couple of days.”

“Is it James?”

I tilted my head.

“He told us you’re dating.”

He did?
