He walked the three steps back to me and took my hand, guiding me inside the kitchen. I grabbed a tiny orange chocolate from a container and placed it on his tongue when he spun around to face me.

“Now you know why the gift bag was tiny.”

He lowered his mouth to mine and kissed me deeply. The taste of orange and chocolate spread along my tongue and I moaned, gently pulling away. He kept my body close to his, resting his thick thigh between mine, sending my arousal surging.

“Doesn’t change the fact I can’t wait to get the thing off you,” he said into my mouth, flexing his thigh muscles enough that I felt it in my core. This was moving too fast. Being truthful would be easier with alcohol.

“We should celebrate my new job with champagne.”

He backed up. “I don’t have any.” His forehead wrinkled. “But my parents do.”

“I’m fine with whiskey, too.”

Anything to ease my nerves.

He kissed me on my lips. “I’ll be back in two and a half minutes to drink champagne from your belly.”

Back from where?

The realization hit me too late, and he was out the front door and over to his parents’ house.

No, no, no.

I ran out the back and crossed the lawn barefoot. I hopped over a hedge and nearly slipped in a muddy puddle, which splattered to my thighs. Jake’s tent, where Foxy slept with his grandfather, stood propped closer to the shore. I hurried up the back steps and opened the door before James could arrive at the front.

“Teresa!” I called her attention away from a magazine she was reading.

“Laura? What are you doing here?”

“Where’s Foxy?”

“He’s sleeping upstairs. Why?”

Oh, thank God I came.

“Not in the tent? James is coming.”

“Now?”

“He’s here for the champagne in your fridge. We only have a few seconds.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll shush him away.” She scanned me from the bottom up. “What are you wearing?”

“This is my trying to tell James he fathered my child outfit.”

She hoisted a shoulder. “Good choice.”

The doorbell chimed, and I heard Foxy calling from upstairs.

“Don’t worry. Jake will get him.”

We waited, looking up to the second floor, but no sound came again.

“You should either hide or leave.” Teresa nudged me to the kitchen, but it was too late. The front door swung open, and James walked through. I swiveled on my foot and stared at him like a deer stuck in the headlights while Teresa tried to cover me with her body.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

“Laura? What are you doing here? Mom?”
