“You’re not going anywhere in those dirty feet.”

He opened the door and helped me set the champagne on the counter, then carried me to the upstairs bathroom. He lowered me to the bathtub’s corner and opened both faucets, adjusting the water’s warmth.

“I’m sorry for being so stupid,” I whispered.

“There’s nothing silly about chocolate cravings.”

I smiled as he removed the shower head from its hook. He switched the faucets and aimed the stream at my feet. He gripped one foot in his hand while pumping soap onto the other and washed it thoroughly before proceeding with the second one. A quick rinse later, he dried them with a towel, and I stood up in the bathtub to face him.

“Thank you.” I stepped closer and wrapped my hands around his neck. His defined back was reflected in the mirror, taking my breath away. Columns of muscles and rows of more muscles stacked from his shoulders and down his back, narrowing near the waistline. I leaned into him and watched him curl himself around me, breathing me in. His arms held me like they belonged there, and I belonged in his hold. He gripped the shirt I was wearing and slid it over my head, leaving me in the skimpy negligee. He pressed his cheek against my chest and breathed me in, skimming his fingers over my ass cheeks. Arousal pumped through my veins. I raked my fingers along his scalp and he shifted, looking up.

“My bed.”

I nodded.

He secured his arms underneath my ass and lifted me straight up, carrying me to his bed. I lowered to the sheets and backed away, giving him space at the front. He knelt on the bed in his jeans and looked like a famished Greek god. Jesus, he looked hot. My insides quivered, and the heat consuming my body traveled through my limbs and collected between my thighs.

“I just realized I haven’t been in your bed before,” I whispered.

“Today we correct that mistake.”

He crawled on all fours over my legs and up my torso, forcing me to lie back. The weight of his muscles pressed me into the mattress as he hovered above me. I smoothed his hair to the side.

“James, there’s something I need to tell you.”

“No, no. We’re not having any serious discussions before I have you.”

“Why not?” I asked.

“It’s a life lesson. The minute we talk about serious stuff, life and problems return. I don’t want to think about serious. Right now, I want to make love to you.”

My breath hitched, but I had no time to reply as he kissed me hard. He tore through my thoughts with his tongue strokes, and I forgot how much I wanted to tell him that Foxy was his son.

CHAPTER 10

JAMES

Laura was standing by the bar with Allie, and I waved her over to our table. She lifted her glass, hugged her best friend, and meandered through the maze of chairs. The deep v-cut in her sequined body suit ended at her navel, and drew attention from every man who passed. I memorized the face of each bastard and added them to my hit list. We were officially official, and I wouldn’t let anyone steal her.

My parents approved more of Laura more than Tiffany, but then again, how could they not? Laura was an ex-police officer and a single mother providing for her son. She was responsible and independent, beautiful and honest, both inside and out. And I was a lucky man to have her.

Her curly hair spilled down her shoulders, and she looked absolutely stunning in the revealing pantsuit. Dinner had passed in a haze as the family discussed Simone Hartley’s miraculous return from the dead, but all I could do was think about how to get Laura into the suite I’d booked at the hotel. I stood up and pulled back her chair.

“Thank you.” She sat down and clasped her hand over mine, grinning.

“I thought I lost you for a while.”

“Just catching up with Allie. Tristan’s not having a good night.”

“No, he’s not. It’s never good when ex’s come back to life.”

“Ex’s aren’t good when they’re alive either,” she snickered, and I burst out laughing.

Across the room, my ex was salivating over Marc Leonardi, a young billionaire who’d inherited his name and wealth. She’d hang onto his arm until she figured out he was engaged. It’d be easier for me if he were single.

I cleared my throat. “We set the event up weeks ago. Tiffany’s company furnished Hope for Hope and made a generous donation to the foundation. I should have mentioned sooner that she’d be here.”

“No worries. We’ll be fine as long as she stays in her corner.” Her beautiful mouth stretched wide, showing off her pearly whites.
