“I’ll tell you what: if you ride my dick like that every time, you can cuff me anytime.”

She rose and looked up. “I can do better than that.”

My brows rose in a slow arch. “You can, can you? Come here.”

I gently rolled her over and hovered above her, kissing her forehead, nose, and lips. I kissed my way down between her breasts, then carefully around her right side.

“Your wound is healing nicely,” I said.

“Doctor Hippo said it could take a few months for the scar to fade.”

“Doctor Hippo?”

She froze. A forceful swallow worked her throat as her eye twitched.

“He was the on-call emergency doctor when I came into the ER.” She shimmied from underneath me and pulled the covers over us both.

“Next time I see him, I’ll have to thank him for doing such a good job on my girls.”

She snuggled into my side.“Oh, there’s no need. He’s busy enough, and I’m certain my parents have thanked him a thousand times.”

I took a deep breath in and released it in slow motion. The sound of my drumming heart calmed in my head and I concentrated on her breaths.

“I’m sorry about Tiffany,” I said, rubbing my aching left shoulder.

“She’s still in love with you.”

“I know. I’m not trying to lead her on, but it’s difficult not to share time with her when we have the girls, and—”

“You did nothing wrong, James. I saw the whole thing, which was short of her getting up on that bench and riding you.”

“You know I would never let that happen. I love you, Laura.”

She stilled. “What?”

“Why are you pulling back?”

“You said you loved me.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Why?”

A sharp pain flew underneath my ribcage. “Because I do. What’s the big deal?”

“What do you mean, what’s the big deal?” Her forehead creased and her body tensed.

“Are you angry because you can’t tell me you love me back?”

“It’s not that easy.” She shot up and tried to get out of the bed, but I grabbed her before she could leave.

“Don’t go. I don’t want you upset.” I pulled her back into my hold and whispered, “I’m not expecting an answer back. I just wanted you to know.”

She shifted. “I’m not ready. My life feels like a mess, and I need to fix things before moving forward. Lots of things. I want to reconcile with my parents. I want to make things right.”

“So, you make them right. Better yet, let me help you with whatever you need.”

“It’s not that simple. James, we need to talk.”
