Her voice cracked, and we sat up in my bed. She picked at her fingernails as her hands shook.

“That doesn’t sound good.”

She shook her head in a swift arc. “There’s something I’ve been keeping from you. It’s… it’s about a baby—”

“I already know.”

Her head flew up, and I took her clammy hands into mine.

“I’m so sorry about your baby.”

“What?”

“Your parents told me you lost a baby when you were eighteen.”

“They told you?”

“Yes, and it’s not your fault. Ouch.” I grabbed my left side and stretched my left arm above my head.

“What’s wrong?”

“I… I don’t know.”

I lowered my arm, and the pain zapped around my ribcage. “Argh!”

“James? What’s the matter?”

She shot up in the bed. My heart raced, my head spun, and my vision blurred.

“I’m losing consciousness.”

A second later, everything went black.

CHAPTER 11

LAURA

Ipaced up and down the hospital hall. The hum of patients’ conversations carried through the room as I prayed for James’s recovery. He’d passed out naked on the bed, and I’d called for the ambulance from my cell phone while getting the hotel doctor from the room’s landline.

James remained unconscious, with a weak pulse and a shallow breath. The two minutes before help arrived were the longest of my life. I covered him with a blanket and dressed in a haze, checking his pulse every thirty seconds. I rode with the paramedics, and I called Teresa and Jacob on the way to the hospital.

To top the night off, he’d told me he loved me.

The fogged glass door slid open, and a nurse came out with a chart. “Ms. Young?”

“Yes, that’s me.”

“You came in with Mr. Silver?”

“That’s right. Is he okay?”

“His spleen ruptured, and they’ve taken him to surgery. He’s lucky you were there when it happened.”

“So he’ll be okay?”

“He had internal bleeding and lost some blood, but he was brought in quickly. We’ll know more once we get in. I’ll keep you updated.”

“Thank you. Wait… he’s likely to get a transfusion, and the blood needs to be irradiated. He has leukemia… furry cell… no, hairy cell… hairy cell leukemia.”
