“Yes.”

“How… how did you find out?”

“Laura was told her baby died at birth, like I said. But Kensi’s baby bracelet that she had when she was adopted is identical to the one in a photograph I got from Laura’s parents. I haven’t verified the records yet, but Laura’s the anonymous donor who gave Kensi a piece of her liver. I’m confident they’re a match, and…”

I rested my elbows on the counter.

“And?”

“And I got a match on Kensi’s DNA profile. It’s definitely Laura.”

“Oh, my God,” she whispered again. “Does Laura know?”

“No. I stormed out after you told me about Foxy. I couldn’t think about anything else.”

Tiffany poured herself a heavy glass of wine and knocked back a few healthy sips. She set the glass down, looked at me, and lifted it back to her lips, taking a few more swigs.

“I’m not losing my daughter,” she said. “She may have your son, and you should fight for him, but I’m not giving away my daughter.”

“No one’s asking you to give Kensi away. You’re her mother. We’ll always be a family. But I can’t keep this secret from Laura for long. And when you look at things from a legal perspective—”

“No, James. No. It’s not happening.”

“Tiff, you bought a baby on the black market. If this goes to court and they ask for papers, we could lose Kensi. We could gain so much more if we talked to Laura.”

“You’ve already forgiven her for stealing your son?”

“Foxy’s a different issue. I’m going to Austria for my brother’s wedding this Christmas. Let me take the girls.”

“No.”

“You can come with us.”

“I’m not taking Kensi anywhere near her.”

“Eventually, we’ll have to tell her the truth.”

“Make it later.”

“If she gets a legal team, she will win her case, and I don’t want to involve lawyers. We have to solve this on our own. Tiff, please. Don’t you get it? I’m in love with this woman.”

The girls laughed outside, blowing soap bubbles into the air.

“Despite what she’s done?”

I nodded, and she rose higher in her seat.

“I need time to think. Give me this Christmas with Kensi. I want time with her before everything changes. I’ll take her to my sister’s.”

“The girls would be separated.”

“Kensi will be with her cousins. My sister’s kids are closer to her age. She’ll be fine, and I already saw Laila playing with Foxy, so they’ll get along.”

She reached for a tissue and blew her nose.

“Tiff—”

“If you’re asking me to reason right now, it will not happen, James. I’m not giving up my daughter, and I need time. That’s my final offer.”
