Partially illuminated by a night lamp, he was sitting cross-legged. He dragged his gaze up my body. My skin seared underneath the robe, and I wasn’t sure whether it was from the shower or him. Likely the former.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” He stood up and crossed the room toward me. “I knocked, but you didn’t open the door. And yes, I’m very lucky you don’t have a gun.”

“I was in the shower.” I pulled the robe tighter around me. “What… what are you doing here?”

“I didn’t say hello when you arrived. I didn’t want to overwhelm you. The family can be a little… forward.”

“No.” I smiled. “They’re perfect.”

“Thank you for coming.”

“Thank you for inviting me.”

“James…”

“Laura…”

We chuckled at the same time.

“You’re stressed, and I want you to relax. It’s Christmas.”

“I’m trying. It’s a lot to take in. I’m in a new country with Foxy, and your family’s here, and you’re here.” I shut my mouth to stop the babbling and turned to observe James focusing on his son.

“He’s really mine?” he asked.

I nodded.

“He’s amazing and bright, and you must hate me for keeping this from you.”

“I could never hate you, beautiful.” He turned back my way and brushed my hair off my cheek to behind my ear. “I’m just so sorry for the way I reacted and treated you. I never gave you a chance.”

“I’ve wanted to tell you for a long time. Even before the arrest, but I never found the right time.” I sighed. Teresa was so right.

“We have the time right now.”

I yawned. “What time is it?”

“About eight o’clock.”

“Feels like it’s past midnight.”

“It’s two in the morning back home. You can cure jet lag if you stay up your first night.”

“So you’re saying I shouldn’t go to bed?”

He glanced over my shoulder. “Definitely not that bed.”

I bit my lip, and he bent down to my ear. “I don’t want Foxy waking up when I fuck you.”

His hands snaked down my back to my behind, and my body pressed flat against his. Could this be true? Was this the prequel to makeup sex? If so, I welcomed his forgiving hands squeezing my ass because nothing felt better than his fingers digging into my skin. I closed my eyes, and his lips gently touched mine for a slow, drawn-out kiss. He pulled away, leaving me breathless.

“I love kissing you, and I love having you in my arms.”

I loved forgiveness. It closed wounds and opened new doors.

I placed my hand over his heart. “I need you to know I’ve wanted nothing more than for Foxy to have his father in his life. I just didn’t know how to make it happen, and—”

“Allow me to make it happen.” He lowered his mouth back to mine for another sensual kiss. My heart felt fuller than ever. So many wrong words had been said and so many right ones had been stuck in my throat. I pulled away from the kiss and took hold of his face.
