“No.” My voice quivered. The moment I joined the conversation with my cougar friends, they’d dig their manicured claws into my bear.
He leaned into my ear. “Liar.”
Shivers ran down my spine. “Okay, maybe I’m a little nervous. I need champagne.”
His eyebrows jumped up.
“Oh, don’t look at me that way. One glass of champagne won’t hurt me.”
“Champagne coming up.” He snapped his fingers, and a manservant brought me a flute.
“Aren’t you going to have one?” I asked.
“Not my favorite, and I’m on duty.”
I turned in a circle, comically extending my arm. “Do you see any danger? Because all I see is a ton of horny women gossiping and having fun.”
“It’s the Housewives of Cougar Court.” He snickered.
“They’re not housewives, Hunter. My friends are successful business women—”
“Who enjoy your aunt’s young servicemen.”
“Manservants. And they’re professional. Now stop teasing and go on the slide.”
“I’m stuck to your side all day, Grace. I go wherever you go.”
“Perfect. Slide it is.” I looped my hand into his arm just as someone tapped my shoulder.
“Grace? There you are.”
Emma hugged me hard, whispering in my ear. “I have so much to tell you. How do I get you away?”
She turned to Hunter. “Hey, cuz. Mind giving us a few minutes?’
“Sorry, Ems, but I’m not leaving Grace’s side.”
“Well, can you scooch over a few feet? Give us some privacy?”
Hunter scratched over his beard, grabbed a steaming pretzel off a table, and stepped aside. Emma pulled me further away.
“Did you see the new guy your aunt hired?”
“The one with the cowboy hat? Yes, I saw, but what the hell, Ems? Why did you tell Hunter I was at the clinic?”
“He blackmailed me. I had no choice! But it sounds like Scar found you just in time.”
“How do you know?”
“It’s all over Silver Securities. My brothers and cousins are all trying to keep a lid on it.”
“Fucking Hartleys. No wonder their sister went crazy.”
