“May I ask if everything went well with your appointment?”

“Our embryos are now growing in a lab. Implantation next week.”

“Congratulations. That’s great news. And how long did it take?”

“Third cycle. My wife went through a homeopathic treatment before the last one, and it must have worked.”

“Really?”

“You know, I think I have a pamphlet in my bag at Carly’s, if you’d like to check it out. All natural and safe. Dr. Riley approved of the treatment. You can ask him yourself. I was pretty sure he’d be here today.”

“I’d love to see the pamphlet, but I need a drink.”

“I recommend the lemonade. It will quench the thirst.”

Rick turned to the table and poured me a cup from the dispenser at the table.

“Thank you. Now tell me about this homeopathic treatment.” I sipped on the lemonade.

We crossed the row of hydrangeas, and I followed him to the side entrance between Bev’s and Carly’s houses.

“My wife took the pills every day for a month. It’s supposed to help the eggs mature, and it worked.”

The sun beamed from above, and sweat dripped down my spine. I finished the lemonade and set the cup on a rock outside, feeling woozy.

“Are you all right?” Rick asked. “You look pale.”

“I’m feeling a little lightheaded.”

He took my hand and pulled me inside, a bit too forcefully. My knees softened and buckled underneath me, but Rick caught me by my arms and lowered me to the ground.

“What’s going on?” I whispered. “I… I can’t breathe.”

“Just try to relax, Grace.” He dragged his hand over my sweaty forehead. “That’s a good girl. It will be all over soon.”

“Grace! Grace!” I heard Hunter’s voice in the distance, but my eyes closed before I could reply.

CHAPTER 9

HUNTER

“Grace? Grace, wake up, baby.” I skimmed my hand over her cheek. Her lips were blue and her skin translucent. “I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have left you.”

Ambulance sirens blared as we sped to the hospital. The paramedic stuck an IV into her arm, but the doctors would need to pump her stomach.

Fucking Chad Hartley had been staking out Grace’s house for weeks. I darted out of the house as soon as Silver Securities called me. Scar followed me, calling out for his sister. I screamed her name, searching through the crowd.

“Grace!”

My gaze caught Chad’s head as he closed the side door to Carly’s.

“Grace!”

I pushed my feet hard, my life flashing before my eyes, and burst through the door in time to see Chad dart out the back. Grace lay unconscious in the hallway, her body soaked in sweat. We had paramedics on standby at the party, but I’d never expected to use their services. They were at Grace’s side a minute later.

“Is she gonna be okay?” I asked.

“Do you know what she took?”
