“She was drugged, but it shouldn’t be lethal.”

“How do you know?”

“Because the fucker who did this wants her alive,” I said under my breath. “And it’s my fault he almost got her.”

My phone rang with Scar’s number, and I picked up.

“How is she?”

“Same as she was three minutes ago. Unconscious.”

“I found a lemonade cup with residue and sent it to the lab. I’ll get you the results asap.”

“Thanks, Scar. Listen, I think once Grace is well, I’m gonna take off.”

“You’re gonna leave her?”

“No—I’m taking her with me. At least for a while, you know? I know he slipped up, but Chad’s too close. He’ll be furious he didn’t get her. He’ll try again, and I can’t have her here for that.”

“Got it. Just take care of her, will ya?”

“Scar?” I filled my lungs with air and took Grace’s hand in mine. “I don’t know what I’d do if I lost her.”

“But you didn’t.”

“We were right there. How did he get through?” I asked.

“He posed as Carly’s new gardener, so we’re gonna widen our net. There’s word he’s now bragging about creating his pure race.”

“Fuck his pure race. Once we leave the country, we’re not coming back until he’s eliminated.”

“Anything to keep her out of the bastard’s hands. Keep me updated on her condition.”

I hung up and took her hand in mine.

Grace’s family hovered at the hospital for the next twenty-four hours. Security stood at her door, and we screened every nurse and doctor. They pumped Grace’s stomach and flushed it with charcoal and gave her fluids, but she didn’t regain consciousness. After many scans and tests, the doctor said that Grace was simply sleeping.

“You’re saying she’s in a coma?”

“No. I’m saying everything is fine with Grace, but the stress and the drugs are keeping her asleep. Continued fluids will flush out her system, and she’ll wake up.”

“Make it happen, Dr. Simmons.”

Twenty-four hours later, Grace squeezed my hand, and I lifted my head off her bed. She opened her eyes.

“Hey, beautiful. You snore like a bear.”

“I do not.” She smiled, looking around. “Why am I at the hospital?”

“Chad Hartley drugged you at the party.”

She blinked repeatedly, and her forehead furrowed.

“Don’t think right now. Just rest. We’re flying out as soon as you’re strong enough.”

She lifted her head, and I gently pushed on her shoulder to make her lie back down.

“Flying out? Where are we going?”
