He took my hand. Instant heat flew through my veins. “This way.”

The enormous eco-house wrapped around the tree’s trunk. Sleek drapes floated over the mesh windows. I followed him past the kitchen and through a partition to a space larger than the sitting area and bedroom. Lights twinkled everywhere. His enormous feet flapped against the polished wood to the tune of my pulsing ovaries. I felt like I was living a romantic fairytale, beautiful man included.

“That’s another bedroom?” I stopped, pulling on his hand and pointed to the bed beyond a white curtain.

“Yes.”

“Why did you sleep on the net above me last night?”

“Because it was your first night here. I didn’t want you alone or afraid.”

It had made me feel better knowing he was near, watching over me.

“Thank you. So you’ll sleep here tonight?”

“We’ll see.”

Was that a wink? What did that mean?

He flicked open a mesh partition to the outside. The magnets closed the seal behind us, and we scaled up a small suspended bridge covered with more mesh. Feeling the sway underneath us, I tightened my grip on his hand. We stepped on another platform, through another partition, and into an oval washroom.

My mouth dropped open. “Hunter… this is… this is incredible.”

Wood covered the entire space, with branches waving along the walls. More fairy lights twinkled around the perimeter, giving the space a warm glow. A cabinet stood near the main branch, with two sinks. On the other side, near the mesh window, were two open showers. I paced forward, taking in the natural decor and beauty.

“Why do you have two showers?” I asked.

“When I built this place, I was thinking about you.”

I turned around and found him right behind me.

“Hunter…”

His hands slowly drew up my arms to my shoulders. He towered over me and slowly wrapped me into his bear-like body. My head rose and then lowered to his chest until he kissed the top of my head and breathed out. “Grace… my queen.”

I pulled away and looked up. There he was. My Hunter. My over-protective best friend, lover, and bodyguard. He cupped my face in his hands and drew his thumbs over my cheeks.

“I… I still love you, Hunter. I never stopped loving you, and I’m not sure I ever can.” My heart pattered against my ribcage. Was I getting this wrong? Because it felt very right. “Hunter, please say something.”

Instead, his mouth covered mine, drawing out a sensual kiss and messing with my head. His tongue slipped between my lips, and my arms fell to the sides, limp and unresponsive.

When he pulled away, he braced his forehead against mine, breathing hard.

“I never stopped loving you either, Grace.”

“Please don’t saybut—”

“But we’re both starving.”

Yes. Yes, we were. Except I was starving for him.

He kissed me again, ever so gently, and backed away, pulling a white shirt over his head. It was just him and me… and thousands of twinkling lights in the middle of nowhere.

“And I need a shower.”

He stepped out of his shorts, springing free, and turned on both shower heads. My belly did a somersault, and my ovaries nearly burst with emotional overload, thumping through my pelvis. I watched him submerge beneath the stream and tilt his head back. He pulled his fingers through his hair and turned around with a sly grin. “Be a good girl and wash up before the water runs cold.”

There it was. Two words that turned the flaming desire in my chest into an inferno.
