“So Grace wasn’t here when we got here?”

“No. I went back to the salon, but Grace was gone by then, and Emma told me she got a text that Grace went home. I assumed we missed each other on the road. Are you surprised she’s not home?”

I wasn’t. “Listen, can you make some calls to see if Grace is in a hotel somewhere?” I rose from my elbows, but lost my balance and stumbled to the floor with a grunt.

“Are you okay?”

I recovered my breath. “Yeah, I’m fine.”

“I doubt you’re in any shape to look for Grace. I’ll get the search going and be over in fifteen minutes.”

I braced myself on my hands as my eyes fogged. “I just need some water.”

“Then get some fucking water, and I’ll be over soon.”

He hung up, and I dragged myself to the shower where the water dripped in what felt like slow motion. By the time I finished, the front gate buzzed, and Scar drove through with his wife, Julia. I jumped into a pair of jeans and a shirt before going downstairs to open the door.

“You look like hell.”

This hangover would hold for days. I shut my eyes, willing the pain away. It didn’t work. “I had no time to shave. Any word about Grace?”

Julia, a doctor, set her medical kit on the table and removed an IV bag of fluids from within.

“Nothing from Grace. Silver Securities is calling around and searching.”

“Damn it! Why would she do this to me?”

“Because you stink like a distillery,” Julia said.

“I need to find her.” I moved to the door, but Scar grabbed me by the arm and pulled me to a chair.

“Sit the fuck down. The search team is out already, and you can join them after you’re done with the IV. It’s only two hours.”

“She could be dead in two hours.”

“Chad’s behind bars. He won’t kill her.”

“Like rape is better? I’m gonna fucking kill that bastard.”

I stood up and Scar pushed me down again.

“I said, sit down. I’ll cuff you to the chair if I have to. You can’t help her if you’re drunk and delusional. Chad’s been transferred, and he’s nowhere near Grace. She’s probably in a hotel room. We’ll call around and find her.”

My phone buzzed on the table from the other side of the hall.

“Maybe it’s her.” I jolted, but Julia held my stretched arm in place. She cleaned the skin with an alcohol pad and tied an elastic around my bicep.

“I’ll get it.”

Scar brought my phone. It was another call from Rachel, so I set it aside. I had no time or patience for her conspiracy theories.

“Not important?” Scar asked.

“It’s Rachel. She’s bugging me about getting checked… You know, to see if I can have kids. She has a conspiracy theory about Dr. Grios down in Costa Rica. Said he had an agenda to fill the world with pretty babies.”

Julia stuck the needle in my arm. I barely felt the pinch. “You should get checked, though, just in case. For yourself and for Grace.”

She set a pillow underneath my arm and adjusted the IV flow. “And since when do you not believe in crazy? Haven’t we all seen our share of it? People have done worse than Grios.”
