“She’s pregnant,” I said.

“What?”

“What?”

They chimed at the same time. Julia pulled a chair away from the table and sat across from me. I turned my head to Scar. “You told me she went to the clinic. I found a pregnancy test, which means Dr. Riley fertilized her egg. ”

“So, not yours?”

“I’m sterile.”

“If Dr. Grios isn’t a mad scientist.” Julia tilted her head. She had that look on her face she reserved for Scar when he re-coated furniture—a hobby no one understood— and didn’t warn the family about drying paint.

“Jules, you’re a doctor. Since when do you believe in conspiracy theories?” I asked.

She leaned forward. “I work at a hospital. Trust me, I’ve seen my share of unbelievable. It’s worth checking out, and it’s possible—”

My front gate buzzed, then buzzed again with insistency. Whoever was there was stabbing their finger vigorously on the button.

I checked my phone and let Rachel in through the gate. Moments later, she stormed through the front door like hurricane.

“Why the hell aren’t you answering my calls?”

“I’m a little busy right now.”

“It’s fucking important.”

“Can’t you text?”

“Since when do you text?” She gestured to the IV. “What the fuck is all this? Did you get drunk?”

“Yes. Grace is pregnant.”

“I knew it! You’re gonna have a baby.”

“It’s not my baby. She got it in vitro.”

Julia stood up and set her hands on her hips. “Do you know anything about in vitro?”

We all turned her way.

“It’s a process. Even if she just got the embryo transfer done a few days ago, it takes time for the blastocyst to hatch, come out of its shell, and attach itself to the uterus.”

We all stared at her like she was speaking in tongues.

“What I’m trying to say is that if Grace saw Dr. Riley a few days ago, she couldn’t get a positive pregnancy test this fast. She was pregnant before.”

I grabbed my phone off the table and fumbled before dialing the clinic’s number. An answering machine turned on.

“Fuck. He’s on vacation.”

I dialed Dr. Riley’s private number next. It might have been out of line, but he was Grace’s aunt’s boyfriend, and this matter was personal. I waited for the beep after his recording.

“Hi, Dr. Riley. It’s Hunter Silver. I’m sorry to call you on this number while you’re on vacation, but this is urgent. It’s about Grace. Please call me back as soon as you can.”

I hung up.

The sound of my heart drummed over my thoughts, and I shut my eyes, desperate to concentrate. Grace’s breasts were fuller, and her appetite had changed. She was horny, but that was nothing new. But she was also on hormone shots, which could explain the symptoms…
