What the fuck had they done?

"I'm out, Macy," Dad groaned. He stood up and stretched, grabbing his keys and tucking them in his pocket.

"I've got a bit more to do," I admitted. I'd finished filing all his chaos and now I was cutting through the pull tabs on the employment fliers.

"Don't go handing them out yourself, make the boys work for it," he smirked before it darkened. "Just watch out for them, honey. They can be...."

"Intense, flirty? I can handle it," I promised. "I'm not looking for any of that right now."

No, Dad, it had already found me.

He nodded once, looking worried, then left me in peace. Clearly, I wasn’t a good liar. He saw right through me.

A soft knock a few minutes later had me looking up to see Elias's smiling face. He always looked so playful but I had a feeling it was a mask. No one was that happy all the time.

"Still working? I was thinking dinner sounded good. My treat. You interested?"

"No," I deadpanned. "You three really need to learn the meaning of that word."

"What if we win tomorrow night?" he countered. "Celebratory date?"

"How about a celebratory friend hang out?" I countered.

"Will you be working tomorrow?" That look was back. The one that said they had something up their sleeves.

"What are you up to?" I demanded, narrowing my eyes and hands going to my hips.

"Has anyone ever told you that you're sexy when you're angry?"

It was so ridiculous that I burst out laughing and tossed a crumpled paper at him. He dodged it easily and laughed, the sound booming in the small space.

"Get out of here right now," I mumbled as I got back to work, dismissing him completely. He lingered in the doorway and I heard him mutter something to himself before finally leaving. I hated that he left as much as I was relieved to be out from under his gaze.

As the sun dipped down and darkness overtook, I continued to work, determined to finish tonight. The entire time I busied myself I couldn't shake the guys from my thoughts.

They had my head in such a mess. I wanted to say fuck it all and give them a shot but then my broken heart reminded me that my taste in men was clearly broken.

But Luke wasn't even my type.

I'd given in one lonely night and now I regretted it more than ever.

Theywere my type. Strong, fit, playful, sexy, cocky, but usually guys like that didn't give girls like me a first glance, let alone a second one.

With a huff, I gathered the fliers and put them on the desk for tomorrow afternoon when more businesses were open. I thought this would be a quick task but instead spent hours on this. My determination never waned even on the mundane jobs it would require to get this place back on stable ground.

It was a legacy at this point, something I was ready to dedicate years of my life to getting back to its former glory.

Dad already had me on payroll so I was making more here than I did in the city. New salary, new life.

Though I did need to find a new place. Nothing said ‘loser’ quite like living with your parents at twenty-six.

I clicked off the light to the office, glad the rest of the lights were on. The place was peaceful when it was quiet but on this cloudy night, it felt a bit too empty and borderline creepy.

Then I was plunged into darkness. My panic rose as my breaths came out in quick little pants. I instantly regretted sending Elias away.

"Elias?" I called out, quieter than I'd meant for it to be. He’d left a solid two hours before so I doubted he was lingering.

The soft glow of a street light was the only light in the place and only illuminated Dad's office. I crept back in and looked through the window.
