Strange.

The lights around us were fine and the rain hadn't come yet. What the hell?

Dad's office phone let out a shrill ring and a scream escaped my lips, my heart thudding so hard now a wave of dizziness hit me. Still clutching my chest, I walked over to the phone and picked it up.

"Hello?"

Thank god it wasn't the main line for the rink otherwise that was unprofessional as hell.

"Macy?" Tate's voice was hard. "What's wrong?"

"The lights are out. Just here. Something shut them off but I can't see to find them and I don't know where my phone is in this darkness," I admitted sheepishly.

"You sound terrified," he accused, voice borderline gentle for Tate.

"I'm fine," I lied and he snorted, seeing right through it.

"The last time you were in darkness was that basement, wasn't it?" This time, his voice was quiet and full of not sympathy, but empathy. Something in his tone told me that Tate knew that kind of fear.

"Yes," I admitted, my voice cracking as I squeezed my eyes shut.

"Don't you get off this phone, baby. Brock and Elias are coming for you. Brock has a key."

"Are they here already?" I whispered as something shattered in the distance.

"No," he said, that deadly tone back. "What do you hear?"

"Glass shattering," I said, barely audible now.

"Macy, listen to me. They will get to you first. Get under that desk right now and pull the chair in the best you can. Don't talk, just listen to me," he said. The calm in his tone helped me keep my panic from taking me over but I was one second from rocking in the corner and letting fate take its course. "Now, Macy!"

I jumped as his voice echoed in my ear but it did what he intended, spurring me into action. It was a tight fit but I managed to squeeze my big ass into the space under Dad’s old-school desk and pulled his chair in quietly until it was digging into my leg but my hand held it in place.

A loud bang echoed through the building and I whimpered, biting back the sound as quickly as it escaped.

"Baby, I'm here. You're going to be fine."

I wasn't sure who he was convincing now but I nodded like he could see me, clinging to his reassurances like a lifeline.

Voices filled the hallway before sirens cut through the night. Someone yelled and the pounding of footsteps moved away from me again.

"Cops are here," I whispered to Tate.

"Brock and Elias pulled up, too," he promised. He must have had one of their phones with him to keep up with where they were, too. They barely knew me, attraction aside, but the fact they were this desperate to see me safe had some of my guard threatening to fall away.

"Macy?"

"Brock!" I yelled, dropping the phone and scrambling out from the desk. The beam of a flashlight cut through the darkness and gave me enough light to step safely into the hall. The light shook as he took off at a run, pulling me into a hug. I was crushed against his chest, my heart thudding just as hard as his.

"Are you okay?"

"No," I admitted. Tears burned behind my lids but I didn't let them fall.

Footsteps approached again, quieter this time.

"Someone broke in. They cut the lights and shattered the front door," Elias said. I peeked up to see his face set in an angry glare. "Did they get back this far?"

I nodded. "I heard them but the sirens scared them off before they reached the office."
