"Hello," she offered.

"This is my girlfriend Macy, she'll be joining us," I said with more confidence than I usually showed. They both quickly squashed down their surprise and smiled.

"Macy, it's lovely to meet you," Mom cooed in her fake voice. "You're just... adorable."

I’d never heard that word as an insult but Macy didn't even flinch.

"You are, too. I love those earrings, I saw the same pair at Target and almost bought them. You've got great taste."

The way I almost cackled at my mother's expense...

We all knew damn well those were designer and gaudy as hell. Macy wouldn't be caught dead in them.

Mom flinched but brushed it off quickly.

"Shall we?" Dad said. His voice was less than amused but he at least wasn't a dick yet. I'd take a win where I could get one. I had a very distinct feeling this was about to turn into a pissing contest. Macy seemed more than ready for the battle ahead.

Lunch was at the most expensive bistro they could find in town. It advertised tea time every day and the prices were insane for the small amount of food we got.

Dad waved off the offered menus and I bit back an eye roll.

"We'll have the tasting menu all around and white wine," he said imperiously.

"Actually, I don't drink," Macy said to the waitress. "I'll have water."

A vein in Dad's forehead throbbed angrily and I wondered just how much worse we could make it before this was over.

"I'll have a Coke," I said to her as well. Dad clenched his jaw at our audacity but the waitress was more than sweet as she wrote it all down. She was off and they both turned to my girlfriend.

"Macy, what is it that you do?"

"Well, I left my old job in HR to come home. Now I'm helping my father restore the Hawks’ rink," she said. "That's how Elias and I met."

The waitress came back with our drinks and Mom waited until she walked away to continue the interrogation.

"How quaint. I'm surprised you pried him away from the other two." She let out a mocking laugh and sipped her wine.

"Oh, they're mine, too," Macy said as she also sipped her drink. Mom choked on her wine and Dad clapped her on the back, glaring at us.

"What the hell are you playing at, son?" he seethed, his voice an angry hiss. I met his beady eyes with a confident stare.

"It works for us. I'm playing at nothing, Father. I have a successful, thriving business, a loving girlfriend, friends who stick by me, and I'm happier than I've ever been."

"No son of mine will be so openly... sinful," he said. "Especially not with trash like that."

Mom let out a nervous laugh. "She's hardly good enough for you, son. But if she needs to talk to my diet coach, I'm sure I could arrange something."

Macy laughed, the sound loud in the quiet dining room. That had both of them gaping in horror but I was already standing, tugging her up to stand with me.

"You can stop there," I offered, meeting my dad's horrified look with one of pure disgust. "You're right, I'm no son of yours. You are disrespectful and terrible people. If you grow up one day and learn that you and your rich friends don't dictate what is right and wrong, then feel free to contact me. Otherwise, you aren't welcome in my life. Our life." Macy was smiling broadly at me and gave them a finger wave as we walked away.

The sun felt even more refreshing as it beamed down on my face. I took a deep breath and let out a laugh.

"Man, I feel amazing."

She eyed me cautiously. "Are you okay? That was a bold move."

"It was perfect," I said, dragging her down the sidewalk. "I'm starving, let's find real food. And yes, I'm amazing. You just gave me the courage I needed to finally end that relationship. Fuck them and their haughty bullshit."
