“And?”

“I was only gone for a season or two, but you wouldn’t take me back. Your parents wouldn’t even let me see you. Do you remember any of this?”

“No, not really,” Primrose sighed.

“After that, everything blends together. I remember time going still. I went back to Aeternus. I can recall thinking of what I could do, my last resort to get you back, and after a while…I knew what I needed to do to get you to come home. I came up with the plan to watch you first as a raven and then make my move. I was going to rescue you on your wedding day, but… you got yourself into trouble first. That damn spell.”

She frowned, chest tightening. “I’m sorry I ruined your plan….”

“Don’t apologize. Please, don’t apologize to me. I need you to know that every time I watched you die, every time I lost you, I wanted to dig a grave and bury myself beside you.” He breathed in. “But that isn’t how this works. We’re spirits, not souls. Souls have afterlives. They get to enjoy their time while us spirits, we weremade. I would have been burying myself next to an empty vessel, and my spirit would have been summoned back to Aeternus.”

“You loved me that much?” she asked.

“I love you that much, yes,” he replied.

“Why?”

“You were art, fire, pure unadulterated rage.” He smiled. “You still are, deep down.”

“I wish I could remember, but I don’t,” she said.

“You don’t remember, but… do you believe me?” His jaw tightened in anticipation of her response..

Primrose’s eyes burned as the tears streamed down her face. “I believe you.”

They stood, and Primrose felt her muscles weaken, head lightening. Visions of stars and fuzziness filled her eyes. Before darkness, the last thing she felt was Protego’s strong arms wrapped around her.

“What happened? Where am I?” Primrose asked, candlelight filling her vision.

“You’re in your bed, in the Reditus Castle,” Protego assured her, rubbing his hand against her cheek. “You fainted, starling,”

“I want to go back to Aeternus with you,” she said. Protego froze.

“Are you sure? I have waited to hear those words for centuries, but you were so hurt over having to leave your family to sail the seas with Hugo Mercer, I cannot fathom taking you away from them.” His eyes were somber.

“This life was not meant for me. I will miss everyone deeply, so deeply, but I cannot bear to be without you. It felt as if my heart was ripped out of my chest. I couldn’t even rationalize how I lived a life before you,” she said and kissed his nose.

“Ilona—”

“Primrose,” she said, correcting him. “I would like to keep a little piece of this life I’ve lived.”

“Primrose, then….” His eyes darkened as he lightly pushed her back against the soft mattress of the bed.

She felt her core heat, the ache between her legs becoming stronger as he planted soft kisses up her belly. He moved up her chest and landed on her neck, lavishing her in the feeling of his tongue. Chills went down Primrose’s spine as she ran her hands through his dark hair.

Protego placed a hand between her legs and cupped her thighs, the feeling rippling through her as he inched closer to her center.

“You’re already wet for me, starling?” he purred in her ear.

Protego gently bit her neck, and she shuddered at the combination of it with the feeling of his hand between her legs. He made her feel like liquid fire. Her back arched against the sheets, grinding her body against his hand. Protego pulled her dress up and off before undressing himself. His tan, muscular chest was revealed once more. His body alone caused her toes to curl.

“I want to pleasure you for a lifetime—a thousand human lifetimes,” he said as he pulled down the white lace.

“Prove it,” she taunted.

One corner of his mouth turned up before pressing his lips against hers. The warmth of his mouth on hers, their tongues intermingling, made her long for him more. She needed him, needed him to fill her every desire.

Undoing his trousers, Protego slowly slid his way inside her. She opened for him, allowing him to fill her to the hilt.
