Please, meet me. Please be mine, if only for a few hours.

“Oh, yes, Raziel.” Stars sparkled in her eyes, brighter than every constellation in the sky. “I’ll meet you tonight.”

RAZIEL

Dressed in a blue servant’s gown, Anaria stepped outside the Keep, her glorious hair covered by a scarf. I pushed off the wall and walked away. She followed twenty steps behind, a basket over her arm, her shoulders hunched, steps uncertain, playing the defeated slave perfectly.

A far cry from how she moved when she had a sword in her hand.

Maybe that was what drew me to Anaria.

Her sheer bravery, even though it struck fear in my heart. Or her sheer determination to see something through to the end. Or her kindness, when she should have been bitter and cold, after everything she’d endured. Yet somehow, she’d never lost her soft edges, in a world designed to grind you down to nothing.

I led her past the row of hovels, away from the Keep, into the edge of the vast forest that separated Blackcastle from the Northern Wilds, the thick trees that kept the wild beasts at bay.

The path through the trees wasn’t marked, in fact, no one knew of it except for me and Zor.

Once we were out of sight of the Keep, I offered her my hand, blood roaring in my ears when her tiny palm slipped unhesitatingly into mine.

She was the most beautiful creature I’d ever seen in my long, wicked life, a single white curl escaping her scarf, green eyes locked with mine as I led her deeper into the wood, along the small creek that led to a deep pool.

The branches of lush trees intertwined overhead, like an enormous canopy gave us privacy from whatever gods might be watching from that cold, vast sky. The still, dark water reflected the branches overhead, the faint trickle of falling water was the only thing that broke the quiet.

That deep silence wrapped around us as Anaria set her basket down, her eyes on the blanket spread beside the still water. Laid on a bed of the softest moss I could find.

Quiet anticipation rippled between us.

I didn’t know if this was our last time or the first of many, but I wouldn’t waste one fucking second.

I didn’t know which of us moved first, then we were tangled together, both of us frantic, desperate, my fingers fumbling with the buttons before I wrenched the dress off her shoulders, sinking my teeth into her creamy shoulder, drinking in her breathy moan like a dying male who would never get enough.

Never.I already knew the truth.

I would never get enough of Anaria.

She turned to quicksilver in my hands, heated, molten, her flesh smooth and supple and when our mouths fused together, I cupped the back of her head and took her mouth, desperate and claiming.

I wanted to imprint myself on Anaria, wanted her to taste me for days, wanted to brand myself on her skin for all to see.

The deeper I kissed her, the harder she kissed me back and then we were both laughing as she struggled to shove my trousers down over my hips while I kicked off my boots into the mossy stones. Her hair was undone, spilling over her shoulders as she shimmied out of her dress and when we were naked, we crashed back together.

So far, neither of us had said a word, and I did not care.

Not when we had each other. Not when my chest was bursting apart and I was surrounded by her jasmine-amber scent, her silken hair, her soft, lilting laughter.

My entire existence narrowed down to Anaria, and this…was all I’d ever wanted.

I wound my fingers into her hair and pulled her head back until she looked straight at me, our bodies pressed together from hip to chest. “You are mine, Anaria.Mine. For tonight. For tomorrow. For forever.” I stared so deep into her eyes; I glimpsed her soul, the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.

“Yes, Raz.” She breathed, starlight shimmering in her eyes. “For as long as you want me, I am yours.”

Our next kiss wasn’t plundering, this was a promise.

I’d be hers and she’d be mine, and I pitied the poor fucker who tried to separate us.

She opened her mouth, her star-dusted green eyes glowing, then she smiled softly.
