“How has it been going?”

She grabs my arm. “It’s incredible. I mean, it’s exhausting, challenging, and I think my legs are going to pop right off my body because of how much I’ve been running around but look at this.” She gestures around us. “I did this.”

My gaze sweeps over the swaying crowd, the singer crooning on the stage, and all the people enjoying themselves, singing along, dancing, and laughing.

And I get it.

It’s joy. It’s exhilarating and extraordinary.

“You’re incredible.” I nudge her with my elbow.

Her smile is tender. “Thank you.”

I step close enough that my chest brushes her shoulder. Reaching down, I discreetly squeeze her fingers and speak in her free ear, the one not covered by the earpiece. “I have a surprise for you.”

Her smile widens. “You do?”

“Meet me by the Fox Den sign later, right off the path where we were yesterday?”

She nods, then winces and glances down at her illuminated watch. “It might be late. The last set starts in twenty.”

“We’ve got all night.”

Her eyes gleam. “Do we?”

“I ensured it.”

Her eyes heat and she bites her lip.

My gaze zeroes in on the motion. We’re in a crowd of people in the dark. Surely no one will notice if I take a little taste.

“Ace!” Jake slaps his hand on my back. “I see you found the star of the event.”

I stifle a groan.

“What’s up, Jakey?” Taylor moves away from me with a subtle shift, her fingers dropping from mine.

I ignore the pang in my chest. I know she isn’t embarrassed by me, it’s not about me at all, but the action still stings.

“I came to see if my good buddy here wants to check out the photo booth.” He jerks a thumb behind him.

Taylor made use of some of the random items scattered around Veronica’s as props, and the backdrop was special ordered with the Outfoxed logo splashed all over it. They included QR codes and hashtags on some surrounding banners to encourage posting to social media.

Taylor chuckles, shaking her head. “Laying it on a little thick here, aren’t you?”

Jake puts a hand on his chest. “I have no idea what you mean.”

She looks up at me. “He’s jealous of you and Archer.”

“I am not jealous. Now c’mon, Ace, let’s go take some pictures for the camp photo wall of me and my bestie.” He grabs my arm, tugging me with him.

I shoot Taylor a glance as we walk away, and she nods, silently communicating we’ll meet up later. My stomach dips. We only have a few more days until she leaves.

“We can take pics in the tub together,” Jake says, snapping my attention back to him.

“What?” He wants to take a bath together?

“The porcelain tub.” He points over to the white bathtub set inside the photo area. “Me and that tub have shared some special moments together.” His voice is wistful.
