“You can still be nice.”

He raised a brow. “Is that right? Then why did you send my yellow players back?”

“Well, I mean, I want to win. You should let me.”

“Why is that?”

A good question. She started to answer then saw the sparkle in his eyes and realized he was having fun. And so was she.

She grinned widely, rolled, and landed on his player, sending it back.

He responded by scowling.

She laughed. “What’s wrong, foxy? Scared of a bear?”

“Hell, yeah. You’re brutal.”

Brutal. Not fun, smart, or pretty. Not that she ever expected to be called that, but still.

Her great mood soured until he added, “That’s what I respect most about you. You always give a hundred percent.”

Well, that was kind of a compliment. “I do.”

“You don’t pull your punches.”

“Neither do you.”

“Exactly.”

They stared at each other. She shrugged. “So what does that mean?”

“It means we need to make our game more interesting.”

Strip Sorry immediately came to mind.

Chapter Eleven

Laura swallowed. “What were you thinking?”

The naughty gleam in his eyes hinted Gerald might have been thinking about a game similar to her wicked thoughts. But what he said was, “Let’s play for answers. For each color you get into the home space, I’ll have to answer a question.”

“Truthfully.”

He nodded. “Yes, truthfully. And you’ll answer when I get my players home.”

“You’re on.”

He held out a hand. When she paused, he raised a brow. “Would you rather kiss to seal the deal?” His gaze lowered to her mouth, and his eyes darkened.

“No.” She cleared her throat. “A handshake will do.” But when she put her hand in his, the heat he generated made her shiver. Because it forced every pleasure center in her body to wake up and take notice.

She didn’t understand why Gerald Winter, of all people, should get to her like that, but she couldn’t ignore chemistry. He’d always made her bear growly. No matter when he popped into the sheriff’s office, she’d know he was there. She’d always had an awareness of him and had chalked it up to a predatory drive.

Something in the man put her fur up. Unfortunately, she now realized she’d been sublimating an attraction, not hard to fathom when he looked the way he did. But realizing he wasn’t as much of a jerk as he used to seem was wreaking havoc on her ability to keep a firm, professional distance.

She could not stop thinking about him naked, and she had a feeling he knew that. So when she pulled her hand away from his, she ignored the heat in his gaze and turned back to the game.

In a few minutes, she managed to get a piece home. “Ha! I get the first question.”
