“Go ahead.”

What to ask? “You have to be honest.”

“Of course.”

She studied him, but he seemed sincere about answering truthfully. “Was it you who put shaving cream in Ty’s hat last April Fool’s?”

He gave a sly smile. “Yes.”

“I knew it! You know, they still talk about that prank at work. George mentioned it last week, in fact.”

“I pride myself on my ability to be sneaky. And your boss had it coming for ratting me out to my mother.”

“Oh?”

“But that’s another question you need to earn to get answered.”

She watched him in awe. “Everyone still blames the cats for that. We even found strands of hair Ty swore matched Burke’s.”

“I know.”

“You’re scary.”

“I try.”

She snickered. They continued to play, and of course he landed a player. “My turn.” He looked her over carefully. “How come you don’t date?”

“That’s your question?”

“Honest answer.”

“I…” She cleared her throat, praying she didn’t look as embarrassed as she felt. “I’d like to, but no one’s interested in me like that.”

“Bullshit.”

“Hey, I’m baring myself here,” she snarled.

He shook his head. “Laura, half the guys in town are panting after you. You never give them the time of day.”

“Oh, sure. For a quick lay. But for a real relationship, they go for other women.”

“Huh?”

“You know.” Her cheeks felt hot. “Skinnier women.”

He just stared at her.

“Happy now?”

“Are you seriously telling me that you think all the guys you keep turning down just want you for sex?”

“Am I wrong?”

“Yes, and no.” He shrugged. “You’re sexy. Of course guys want to get with you between the sheets. But I’d imagine they also want a date with the woman everyone in town knows will keep them safe. You help out with schools, assist little old ladies across the street—”

“That was Selma Hawkins, and if you tell that ninety-two-year-old eagle she’s old, she’ll peck your eyes out.”

“—and never have time for the men who can’t help staring at your fine-ass body.”
