“I guess we did.” She let him take her in his arms, and they swayed to the music. She’d never felt more romanced, especially the way he looked at her. As if he truly cared.

“You guess?” He kissed her, and they continued dancing. Her heart beat in time with his, their breaths mingled, and to her shock, their scents seemed to twine.

As if a mate-bond had occurred.

But then, hadn’t she known, deep down, what she’d allowed by being with him last night? By taking him into her body with an open heart?

“Because I know, Laura,” he said softly. “You and I are—”

A rumble stopped him.

Laura froze. “What was that?”

They both hurried to the window and stood to the side, peering out.

She relaxed. “Just a fallen tree.” One overloaded with so much snow it had broken at a weak point. To her relief, the moment had also been broken.

She didn’t know why she wasn’t ready to admit the truth yet, a truth they both felt. It just felt too soon, and it scared her that she could feel so deeply for a man she’d known all her life but until this point had never considered her other half.

Was she wrong? Was it the atmosphere? The thrill of danger? The amazing, off-the-charts scorchingly hot sex?

He must have read the caution in her gaze, because he didn’t mention them again. But he did pull her into his arms and continue to dance. And though she took the coward’s way out for the first time in her life, she didn’t worry about it.

Not with something like her heart, and her future, on the line.

Chapter Eighteen

Laura must have been trying to make up for denying their relationship earlier, because the woman had given him three orgasms already, and Christmas had ended an hour ago.

Gerald lay with her in his arms, content to hold her but still dissatisfied that the woman he’d come to love didn’t want to admit she felt the same way about him. And how could she not? He was perfect. Smart, organized, wealthy, and a fox. There was no one better in all of Cougar Falls.

She had to realize that.

Satisfied that he could at least trick her into admitting her feelings, he accepted his mate’s stubbornness and nestled with her in the comfortable cabin he never wanted to leave. His eyes grew heavy, and he fell asleep.

And woke with her mouth over him.

“Laura?” he said groggily, on his back while his mate—because yes, damn it, she was his—kissed her way up along his inner thighs.

“Good morning, Ger-Bear.”

“What have I said about calling…me…” His eyes rolled up in his head when she took his cock between her lips and engulfed him in one hot swallow.

She cupped his balls, caressing him as she deep-throated him, sucking with enough force to have him ready to come in no time at all. And he should have been too tired after last night.

She moaned, making all the best sounds, and he watched her finger herself while she went down on him. Her pleasure made everything better, so it was no surprise that he had no way to slow down the rush of pleasure overtaking him.

“Gonna come, Laura. So hard,” he said thickly, giving her one last warning.

She bore down on him instead of pulling away and moaned as she sucked harder, coming seconds before he jetted down her throat.

He couldn’t believe how much pleasure she gave him. Everything she did felt good, and that wasn’t normal. Lovers took time to get to know each other intimately, yet with Laura, she knew exactly what he liked, and he instinctively knew the same with her.

She’s mine. My mate.

Ours, his fox agreed, delighted with their bear.

He finally caught his breath. When she crawled back up his body, he hugged her tightly. Gerald had no words and just lay there.
