She laughed. “Finally got you to stop talking.”

“You win.”

“What do I win?”

“Everything.” He sighed and kissed her. Then he glanced out the window. “Uh-oh.”

“What?”

He nodded to the lack of snowfall. “Snow’s stopped. It’s still thick as hell out there, but I wonder if the storm winding down means they’ll be coming.”

The raptors—the assholes ruining his special bonding with his new mate.

Laura groaned. “I was hoping we’d have more time.”

“Me too.” He kissed her again. “If I get my teeth on Roberta or Glen, I’m breaking bones. Just saying.”

She grinned. “Oh, I like the feisty side of you.”

“So you don’t have a problem with the fact that though I’m smaller than you as a fox, I’m faster, sneakier, and a better hunter?” It bothered him that some predators considered size a testament to strength.

He didn’t think Laura was like that, but he had to know. Hopefully, caged as arrogance, his question wouldn’t make her think he was sensitive about his size as an animal. Because he wasn’t…mostly.

She snorted and sat up, treating him to the sight of her amazing breasts. Her hair curled over her shoulders, the soft strands grazing her nipples the way he wanted to. “Better hunter? You wish. I have more scent receptors than a blood hound, doofus. Than a dog—and aren’t you a dog?”

He loved her smirk. “Technically, yes. But foxes have excellent hearing.”

“Better than a bear’s? Maybe.” She shrugged.

He couldn’t help himself and leaned close to kiss her breasts. “I love your body.”

She blushed. “Well, you’re no slouch in the looks department.”

“Please, not so many compliments! My head will get way too big.”

She laughed. “Like it’s not already.” She glanced at the window and sighed. “We should probably set out for the relay station.”

“You really think the raptors will be out already? It’s the day after Christmas.”

She looked back at him. “And how badly do you think Roberta wants to stay in power?”

“Good point.”

They packed up their meager belongings, quickly tidied up the cabin, not that there was much to clean up, and decided to head out in their two-legged forms.

The snow was deep in some spots, but the overhead trees had kept a lot of it from building on the ground where they walked.

As they trekked, Gerald took her hand in his.

She glanced up at him, her cheeks pink, her breath frosting in the air, her eyes bright and beautiful. Long, dark hair curled around her face.

She took his breath away.

And he lost what little mind he had left as he confessed what he’d been feeling forever.

Chapter Nineteen

“I love you,” came out before Gerald could think about what he was saying.
