“Who? What?” Her brain wasn’t firing yet.

He pulled back and smiled. “You’re just as gorgeous when you’re soft and satisfied.”

Her face heated once more. “Would you stop saying stuff like that?”

“Why not? I like the way you look. Why is that wrong?”

She felt like the question was somehow a trap. “I, ah, that’s okay, I guess.” She blew out a breath and took a step back, already missing his warmth. “Let’s talk about dinner with your parents.”

Or should she reciprocate and give him the sexual release he’d more than earned?

“Fine, let’s talk.” He pushed her now lukewarm mug toward her while taking a seat on the couch. “But don’t worry, Laura. We’ll get back to us later.”

“If you’re lucky.”

He sipped his cocoa and smiled over the brim, saying nothing for a moment.

Which had her face heating all over again.

“We foxes are all about making our own luck.”

Chapter Sixteen

Laura couldn’t get over the fact that Gerald Winter had given her an orgasm in, like, three seconds flat. She spent the rest of her Sunday thinking about him and how natural it had felt to be in his arms.

She had to refold half her laundry and rewash a bunch of dishes, too busy daydreaming about what it would feel like to make love to the man for real.

Fortunately, no one called her, so she spent her evening trying to immerse herself in Hallmark movies. Heartwarming and always having a happy ending, the holidays movies were her secret guilty pleasure.

Since Laura had spent much of her life staring at the underbelly of Cougar Falls, she knew better than to expect a happily ever after. Yet that didn’t stop her from wishing for one.

Monday morning, she looked but didn’t see any presents by her front door. The maple sugar bear would need more investigating today, hence her plans to go to the sweet shop downtown before grocery shopping—her least favorite chore.

But before she could get into her car, a large SUV fishtailed on its way to stopping behind her vehicle.

She groaned as her sister hopped out.

Hailey slammed her door closed, her eyes narrowed, her finger pointing with the sharpness of a knife. “Stop it right there, woman. Get your tail back inside. I want coffee and the dirt on you and the town favorite foxy fox.”

“Hailey, I have stuff to do that—”

“Zip it! I had to hear from a friend of a friend of a friend that my twin is dating—no, mating—Gerald Winter! He’s the catch of the decade!”

Laura chewed her lip, not sure if she should confide in her sister or not. She loved Hailey to death, but her twin wasn’t the best at keeping secrets.

Hailey’s eyes narrowed. “You talk to me or I get Mom over here.”

“Fine. Damn it. Come in.”

Hailey stomped past her, mumbling under her breath, just as Julia parked behind Hailey.

“Not you too,” Laura muttered as Julia raced to the front door.

“Hey, I need to talk to you.” She paused at the sight of Hailey behind Laura, glanced back at the SUV she’d parked behind, then swore under her breath.

Before Julia could back away quietly, Hailey yelled her name.

“Yo! Julia! Come on in. We’re talking about Gerald I’m-Sex-on-a-Stick Winter shacking up with my sister.”
