“Shacking up?” Julia’s brows rose to her hairline.

Laura rolled her eyes. “Ignore Hailey. She has a tendency to exaggerate.” Then she frowned at her friend. “Shouldn’t you be at work with said Sex-on-a-Stick?”

Julia snickered. “I’m out getting donuts. My lateness has been approved.”

“He likes donuts?”

“Believe it or not, Gerald has a sweet tooth.”

“Of course he does,” Hailey said, swinging her arm around Laura’s neck and pulling her back, into the house. “He’s making moves on my sweet-ass twin.”

Laura yelped as she was dragged inside.

Julia laughed and followed. “I can’t stay long.”

“Too bad.” Hailey let Laura go and patted a spot at the kitchen table next to her. “Make our coffee, wench.”

Laura gave her the finger before making a pot.

“Any sticky buns in there?”

Laura sighed and grabbed a package of her sister’s favorite treat, which she kept on hand for emergencies like these. And, well, because she loved them.

Though they weren’t identical, Laura and Hailey liked a lot of the same things. Including guys, which had made Laura’s life hell growing up. But Hailey had never been selfish or cruel, spending way too much time trying to get Laura a boyfriend. Eventually she’d stopped, but only because Laura had begged her to give up. The experience had not been great for Laura’s confidence.

But that was a long time ago, she told herself. No need to worry about Hailey turning Gerald’s head now, not with her sister engaged to be married.

After heating up the treats, she set them and a few plates out, not surprised when Julia indulged as well, and took a seat.

“Oh, stop judging,” Julia said around a mouthful of cinnamon and sugar. “I’m stress eating. We have three trials before the holidays, and we deal with the raptors on Thursday.”

“Oh boy. Is Roberta making trouble?” Alarmed at the idea of the raptors messing with Gerald and Julia, Laura sat straighter in her chair.

“She likes to screech and snap a lot, but she’s nothing we can’t handle.” Julia nodded to the coffee machine that had beeped. “You going to get that?”

“Yeah, what she said,” Hailey agreed, licking her fingers.

With a loud sigh, Laura grabbed them all coffee and fixings and set them on the table. “Okay, you two moochers. Eat, drink, and get out. I have a lot to do before I have to go back to work tomorrow.”

“I broke up with Eric.”

Not what she’d expected her sister to say. “What?”

Julia blinked. “Huh?”

Hailey shrugged. “It was a long time coming, actually. He wants to leave town and settle in with the bears up in Alaska. I love it here. I’m not moving.”

“Oh, er, well, good?” Laura didn’t know what to say. She found it odd her sister didn’t seem more upset. “Why are you not angry or crying?”

“Why are you avoiding the subject of fine-ass Gerald Winter?” Hailey countered.

Julia beamed. “Yeah, why, Laura?”

Chapter Seventeen

Laura shot Julia a death glare the stubborn fox ignored.

Julia turned to Hailey. “Oh my gosh. They were so cute at my party. You could feel the sexual tension between them.”?
