Hailey sighed. “I can’t believe you nabbed him. I mean, I can. He’s been a tough one to pin down for years.”

Julia, that traitor, nodded. “I think it’s because he hadn’t found the right woman yet. And we both know Laura likes to play hard to get.”

“What?”

Hailey nodded. “She acts so tough all the time to protect her marshmallow of a heart.”

Laura blushed. “Would you stop?”

“You should have seen how they set Vanessa Baylor back a few steps. She was trying to glom onto Gerald, but Laura shut that down, fast.”

Hailey grinned and clinked her mug against Laura’s. “Way to go, sis.”

“Would you stop?” No way could she confide in her sister. Especially because she feared Hailey might make a play for Gerald. Not that her sister would ever poach, because she really did love Laura.

But Laura had a tendency to downplay her emotions when she wanted something. And for some reason, she really wanted Gerald Winter.

“What’s that expression?” Julia asked.

Hailey grinned. “She’s got it bad for your boss.”

“Ha. About time.”

“What does that mean?” Laura sked.

“Only that I’ve known you two were perfect for each other forever,” Julia confessed. “But you’re both so stubborn.”

“I’m not stubborn.”

Her friend and sister rolled their eyes. “Right,” they said as one.

“You totally are,” Hailey added. “But I’m with Julia. My amazing sister deserves the hottest bachelor in town.”

“You’re single,” Laura said before she could stop herself. “Why don’t you make a play for him?”

She couldn’t believe she’d said that out loud, giving voice to her biggest fear. But she kept talking, unable to stop herself. “I bet if he knew you were single, he’d make a move.”

“No way.” Julia glared at Laura. “He’s not a dog, you know. I mean, technically a male fox is called a dog, but he’s a sensitive, genuine guy. He’s not a cheater or a player. He likes you, Laura.”

Hailey scowled. “Why would you want me to make a play for the guy you’re into? Oh man. Is this Trent Howard all over again?”

“Who?” Julia looked from sister to sister.

“Shut up, Hailey.” Laura wished she didn’t suddenly feel so embarrassed.

“Trent. Howard.” Hailey accentuated the T and D. “He was a jerk back in high school. Laura had a crush on him, and I didn’t know. They were secretly dating—I didn’t know that either. When he asked me out, I said yes. Then I learned, after the fact, that he’d dumped her for me. But it wasn’t even for me. He just wanted to prove he could get any girl to go out with him. Stupid bear.”

She and Laura shared a grin.

“I know that look. What did you two do?” Julia asked, intrigued.

“We hid a dead fish in his car during the summer. It got so bad he had to sell it. Never did find the fish either.”

She and her sister high-fived.

“Good for you guys. I don’t even remember him.”

“He was a transfer student. Didn’t last more than a few months in town,” Laura explained.
