“Didn’t you get the memo, Gemma?”

I look over my shoulder at him. In the darkness of the tunnel, he looks more like a demon than a man. “What?”

“I’m fucking crazy.” He pumps the shotgun, making me shiver. The grin he gives me is animalistic.

“So, you just wanted to kill some guys?”

“Pretty much.”

“Great.”

Viktor’s laugh echoes down the hallway.

A light comes out of the darkness as I reach a door. “Where does this go?”

Viktor reaches around me and opens it. We’re outside at the side of the house. “Come on.” He leads me toward the front yard, and my eyes linger on the driveway. It would be so easy to run right now … but I can’t run, not with my ankle. Viktor would stop me. My only chance of escape is those men inside the house. It warms my heart that Marco would send them to save me. I know he’s only doing it for Emilia, but at least I have my sister looking out for me as always.

I follow Viktor back into the house. In the foyer stands one of the men, his back to us.

“Surprise,” Viktor says, making the guy turn around. His eyes widen in surprise and fear before Viktor fires his shotgun. His body practically flies across the room as his blood sprays the wall all around him. I hear shouts from around the house and the thunder of footsteps.

When someone runs into the foyer, Viktor doesn’t hesitate. He kills him instantly. Another one pauses before entering the foyer. I can only see his gun aiming around the corner.

“Let the girl go, Viktor,” he shouts.

“You’ll have to kill me first.”

The man fires, missing Viktor as Viktor presses himself against the wall. I follow his lead, not wanting to accidently get shot. The man continues to shoot, but his bullets hit the opposite wall. The only victim is plaster. When he pauses, Viktor uses that to his advantage and lunges away from the wall, turning to face the man. He shoots. The guy falls back, his guts hanging out of stomach. I almost vomit at the sight.

Behind me, I hear a creak. I turn to see another of Marco’s men approaching, his weapon pointed at Viktor. All I have to do is stay quiet and let him kill Viktor, and I’ll be free.

But what happens after Viktor dies? I go back home to Mom andFranco, where I’ll be expected to still marry some man I don’t know and live the rest of my life popping out babies like my mother.

I hesitate, then make my decision.

I don’t say anything.

The man continues getting closer to Viktor. I want to shout at him to shoot, but he doesn’t. One more step, and the floorboards creak.

Spinning around, Viktor fires his shotgun. The man dies instantly as he smacks into the wall and slumps forward. Viktor turns to me. “You didn’t say anything.” He puts a hand over his chest. “I’m hurt.”

“Deal with it,” I mutter, disappointment flooding through me. I’m still stuck with Viktor. No one else comes running out. They’re all dead.

Viktor slings the shotgun over his shoulder as he kneels next to the guy he just killed. He doesn’t look much older than me. I wonder if this was his first time doing something like this. Maybe that’s why he didn’t shoot right away.

The urge to cry hits me like a piano falling on my head. I had a chance to escape, and now, it’s gone. Maybe Marco will send more, but after this massacre, I doubt Marco will send more people. He’ll need to regroup and figure out what to do next. I hold back my tears, refusing to let Viktor to see any vulnerability. I’d honestly rather die.

Viktor pulls out a knife and presses it against the man’s stomach. I watch in horror as he cuts him open, his guts spilling into Viktor’s hand.

“What are you doing?” I’m horrified, but I can’t look away.

Viktor lets the intestines slip through his fingers, coating his hand with blood. “I just love the look of organs. Don’t you?”

“You’re insane.”

“So I’ve been told.” He drops the organ, and it lands on the ground with a splat. For a moment, I think that’s it. Then Viktor presses his knife to the man’s throat and starts sawing off his head. My eyes bulge out.

“What the fuck …?”
