The tip of a gun slides out from around the corner, aiming into the kitchen but not at Viktor. They can’t see him, I realize. They’ll have to enter the kitchen to get him.

But I can help.

“He’s in the left corner!” I shout.

The gun turns to him, but Viktor steps out and fires his shotgun. A scream of agony fills my ears. Two more men coming around the corner, firing their guns. Viktor is already one step ahead. He shoots one of them in the legs, blowing them clean off. Viktor ducks as the second man aims his gun. Then he fires his shotgun, blasting the man in the torso and sending him flying back. The kitchen walls are soaked in blood.

Despite four men going down, more fill the house. I can hear their footsteps and shouts getting closer. Viktor runs over to me, getting under the table. “Nice helping that guy.”

“You can’t blame me for trying.”

“I don’t actually. I commend you for being brave. Stupid but brave. Let’s get out of here now, shall we?” He grabs my hand and pulls me out from under the table. I try fighting him, but he holds on too tight.

Viktor opens the pantry and shoves me inside, following me in. We’re so close; I can smell his aftershave. It’s musky and intoxicating.

“We’re going to hide in the pantry?” I ask.

“Nope.” He pulls a shelf from the wall, revealing a door. “Always have an escape route.” He opens the door and shoves me through it. I almost stumble down the stairs leading into darkness.

“What the hell?”

Viktor reloads his gun while motioning me to go down. “What are you waiting for?”

“Oh, sure, I’ll just go down into the creepy basement of doom.”

He gives me a cheeky smile. “I know. I love a good creepy basement of doom.”

I roll my eyes but start walking anyway, being careful of my foot. By the sounds coming from the kitchen, the men have learned that Viktor isn’t there anymore. Viktor follows me down the stairs, which lead to a… creepy basement of doom. The walls are stone, and water seeps from the cracks, giving the air a musty, moldy smell.

“Is this where you bring all the girls?”

He winks as he walks over to a door in the corner. “Only when we’re gonna fuck.” I can’t help it. I blush.

“What’s stopping me from running upstairs and telling those men where you are?”

“Nothing. Just that you’re not going to make it back up those stairs with your hurt ankle before I can stop you. Now, come on. I have some more men to kill.” He motions me to go first down a hallway.

“Where are we?” I ask as I venture into it.

“I had this designed in case I ever needed to make a quick getaway. Quite ingenuous, right?”

I shiver. It’s significantly colder down here than upstairs. “How did you know those men were coming?”

“Who says I did?”

“You weren’t surprised.” A rat runs in front of me, and I gasp, bumping back against Viktor. He catches me, his chuckle making my face grow red and his touch making my body feel warm.

“It’s just a rat.”

“Shut up,” I mutter and continue walking.

“When I met up with Marco the other day, I knew he put a tracker on my car. I found it right away, even before leaving the parking lot. But I left it on, knowing that would bring an army here. Marco made a deal with me, but I knew he wouldn’t honor it. And I was right.”

“But why lead them straight to you? Do you want to get caught?”

He leans in close to my neck, making me jump. “Worried for me?”

“Of course not.” I hurry forward a few steps. “I just don’t understand.”
