“Is that a question?” I mock.

“It’s an order.”

“I think we can talk this over, don’t you?” I give the officer my most sultry, enticing look. She blinks and, for a moment, wavers before grabbing her gun and pointing it at me.

“Sir, get out of the car.”

Damn. I really thought I could flirt my way out of this. Well, if that way won’t work …

I open my door.

“Viktor?” Gemma asks.

“I’ll be fine.” I wink at her as I get out of the car. I face the officer head on. “Nice to meet you …” I squint at her nametag. “Brett. Officer Brett. That has a nice ring to it.”

“I need you to put your hands behind your head.”

“Oh, do I have to?”

“Yes. Now, do it.” She doesn’t look scared pointing her gun at me. Officer Brett is braver than I gave her credit for. But she’s also incredibly stupid because she doesn’t know who she’s dealing with.

I lace my fingers together behind my head, and Brett uses the opportunity to slam me against the car. Gemma gets out, running over.

“Stay back, ma’am,” Brett tells her. I can hear the clinking of handcuffs. “I’m going to have to take you down with me to the station. Both of you.”

As soon as the cool metal touches my skin, I dive into action. I jab my elbow back and hit the cop, making her gasp. Spinning back around, I shove her back, grabbing her gun in the process. She freezes.

“Viktor, don’t shoot,” Gemma warns.

“Aw, but where’s the fun in that? Look around, Gem. There are no cameras anywhere around this area, and the car is stolen, so the license plates won’t lead back to me. Anyway, if I let her go now, I’m just going to send one of my men to deal with her later. Or more likely, I’ll deal with her later. I’m doing her a courtesy by killing her now.”

“No!” Gemma screams as I fire. Brett falls to the ground, a bullet hole in her head. I pocket Brett’s gun and get back in the car.

“Gemma, come on.”

She stares at Brett a moment before getting back in the car. I speed off, wanting to put as much distance as I can between myself and the dead cop. “You killed her.” Gemma sounds dazed.

“I did. You’ve seen me kill people before.”

“Yeah, but … never a woman.”

I glance over at her. She’s staring at the floor, her expression lost. “Hey, I had to. She was going to die. It would be tonight or some other night. You know that. That’s the life I live. It’s the one you belong to now.” I pull out my phone and dial the number of my clean-up guy. “Hey. I need you to handle someone for me.” I rattle off the street while being vague on the details.

“On it,” is his gruff reply. Good ol’ Greg. He cleans up the bodies I leave behind. We rarely meet in person. It’s better for the business that we don’t. I trust him to get the job done.

Gemma sits up straighter after I put my phone away. “You ok?” I ask.

She nods, taking in a deep breath. “You’re right. This world we belong to is a rough one. But you want to know something?”

“Of course.” I slow down as I continue to drive. One officer’s death is enough for the night.

“When she pulled her gun on you … I could only think that I wanted her dead. How messed up is that?”

“Hey.” I reach over and squeeze her hand. “You just wanted to protect your man. Nothing wrong with that.”

“Huh. You’re mymannow?” She’s starting to sound like the Gemma I know.

“I’ve always been your man.”
