My breathing quickens seeing Atlas, Hunter, and Finn heading a circled squad of agents. Men and women, all wearing the same black Wyvern unis.

Hunter’s mouth moves, but there’s no sound. I need to hear what they’re saying. Need to know what’s going to happen.

I clench Orion’s chair. “Audio?”

“Just a sec.” Orion slips on a headset, fiddling with controls.

I’m mesmerized by the silent film.

Hunter takes a deep breath, glancing at Atlas before stepping to the center. Taking the lead.

I smile, secretly proud. Also want to hear his leader speech, and the plan that goes with all his aggressive hand gestures.

After a few seconds with no sound, the agents start to move, cam footage jostling, but just the warehouse roof shows on screen, the monitors go dark.

The hairs on my arms lift.

“Shit. Bad reception?” Orion bangs the console.

I lean forward, heart beating way too fast. “Can you get it back?”

“We are underground.” Orion glances to JJ. “Should we go topside?”

“We’re not leaving the compound.”

“Course not.” Orion pets my arm, maybe trying to smooth the hairs that are still pointing like antennas. “Just park near the fence. We can—”

Tires screech.

Our heads whip to the sound of an engine gunning through the garage.

My arm hairs tingle.

Shit.

Orion and JJ pounce, driving me to the floorboards just before the siding explodes.

Tearing metal, and a world-ending bang.

Everything moves too fast.

And too slow.

Two desperate sets of arms cling to me, and for a breathless second, we go zero-gravity, floating just long enough for a flash of pain and—

Fuck.

The van rocks. Tips.

We land hard. We’re thrown in a tangle, smashing the monitors, landing on top of the sideways desk.

My arm goes numb.

Orion groans.

Have to get out.

My left arm’s wet, and the van’s as black as the screens.
