I heard a big sigh through the receiver. “All right, let’s talk about Scotty, then.”

“Damn, I hoped you’d forget about that.”

“Girlfriend, there is no way I could ever forget the way he looked at you. It was like… he was so concerned that he was crawling out of his skin, and when you got scared because Beck touched you, he had this look on his face like he would fight a lion to protect you from ever feeling fear again.”

My heart flip-flopped. “He’s a nice guy.”

“This wasn’t just him being neighborly. I promise I won’t pry if you don’t want to tell me, but I’m going to ask one more time, and then I’ll let it go. But before I do, I want you to know that Matthew talked to Scotty yesterday during the shower. He wouldn’t give me details, but he just assured me that Scotty had your best interest at heart, and I needed to leave the two of you alone to figure it out.”

“Why would Beck even ask Scotty that?” I didn’t know if I should be offended or flattered.

“Because he knew I was worried about you. Scotty would never hurt a woman, ever. It wasn’t that. I just feel like something is going on that I don’t know about, and I love you both, and I don’t want either of you to get your heart broken.”

This was part of being friends with someone. Telling secrets and trusting them not to use them against you. “We hooked up at your wedding and—”

“I knew it!” she shouted. “I freaking knew it.”

I hesitated, kind of unsure of her tone. “Are you mad about it?”

“Hell no,” she scoffed. “I’m thrilled. I already told you I thought you’d be perfect for each other. I’m excited it’s finally happening.”

“Don’t get ahead of yourself. We’ve just been talking since he moved in, and it might not even go anywhere. Speaking of that, did you tell him where I lived?”

“Cross my heart, I did not. It was pure coincidence. When he told me where he found a place, it took everything I had not to tell him you lived there, too. I wanted it to be a surprise.”

I held back a laugh, and Skittles got scared and ran away. “When I saw him on the patio, it felt like I walked into a brick wall, so I was definitely surprised.”

“Oh, speaking of brick walls. Matthew got a call this morning that two women who were at the shower yesterday got into a car accident on their way home. Blew through a stop sign and slammed into the side of an office building.”

“Holy crap, are they all right?”

“Yeah, he said they were just banged up and needed stitches, and the driver had a concussion. I was worried maybe she had too much champagne, but her blood alcohol levels were below the limit. I didn’t know them well, but they’re friends of his family and one of them also worked at the same hospital as him.”

Someone driving drunk and hurting themselves or someone else was always the biggest fear I had as a wedding planner. “I’m glad they’re okay.”

We chatted for a few more minutes, and when the outdoor bell chimed, we hung up so I could get my order. I went into the hallway and saw a man with several bags through the glass door. I didn’t have many visitors, but one reason I liked this building was because there was no system to buzz someone in. If you had a guest, you had to physically let them in, which I thought was safer. “Hi,” I smiled at the delivery guy.

“Hi,” he mumbled, looking at his worn-out sneakers. “You’re Paris?”

“I am.”

“Can you confirm your last name?”

I felt my forehead wrinkle quizzically. “Why?”

“There’s been some issues with wrong orders. So Paris…”

That made sense, I guess. But it was still weird. “Donovan.”

He smiled. “Then I’m at the right place for sure. I’m Gordon, my mom calls me Gordy, though.”

“Oh, well, hi, Gordon.”

“You can call me Gordy, too.”

This guy was giving off creep for sure. His hair was brown, stringy, and greasy, his T-shirt was inside out, and his jeans stained terribly. “Okay, Gordy, you’re at the right place, so I’ll take these now.” I reached for a bag, but he pulled them away.

“I need to see your ID for the alcohol.”
