The look of shock fades and he gives me an understanding smile. “You must tie up loose ends. Say your goodbyes. I suppose that this is warranted. I was devastated to lose you so suddenly; I wouldn’t wish that on anyone else.”

I nod, grateful. “There are things I need to do first. Not the least of which is getting Pumpkin ready to move over here—because I’m not going anywhere without him,” I add with a sharp look that my demon husband merely responds to with an amused but agreeable grin. “And you’re right, there are goodbyes that need to be said to my friends, my family... my parents.”

He nods. “I understand. As will your parents who will wait for you here.”

“I have only tiny snatches of memories coming in, but I look forward to meeting them,” I say earnestly, and he pauses, his head tipping.

“Did you not recognize them last night? I thought they looked quite fetching. Your mother especially.”

I gape at him in horror. “Are you telling me that my parents were there at the banquet table and we did... and I saw...” My voice trails off in squeak.

Iyano regards me, his lips pursing sympathetically. I almost buy it when suddenly the corner of his mouth twitches deviously and I slap his chest with my palm. “Oh, you ass,” I choke around a laugh. “You actually had me going!”

He chortles in delight, the heavy band of his arms wrapping around me, holding me tightly to his chest. “I couldn’t resist, my love. Oh, but the look on your face—it was priceless!” He drops a smacking kiss to my brow, his purr starting up like an engine in his chest. “But no, my one, they have their own feasts to oversee though you won’t find many demons to be quite so shy,” he teases. “But usually, we have the good taste to at least sit at different banquet tables from our nearest kin.”

I chuckle as I curl into him and sigh when the laughter fades. “That means it’s time to go, doesn’t it?”

He presses a kiss to the top of my head and nods. “It is. Get dressed. Varkoth will carry us as I bring you home the scenic way. There is nothing like our forests on this hallowed night.”

And there truly wasn’t, but it isn’t the beauty of the night that is burned into my memory, but the arms of my husband wrapped around me as we went on one last ride that culminated in a kiss of farewell. Or rather, a kiss to last until we see each other again but there aren’t really any goodbyes for us.

“Same time tomorrow night?” I whisper and he grins lasciviously down at me. “I expect you to be haunting my dreams as promised.”

"Every night,” he growls. “And for every feast you shall be mine for as long as the night lasts in your world. I shall endure this for one year and then, my one, you will be mine.”

I shiver at the promise in his voice. There is much to be done but the year can’t pass quickly enough. “Until then, my love.”
