“And even better at schmoozing,” I retorted drily, remembering all those beautiful women who used to insist on a personal demonstration of his company’s excellent security services.

DV didn’t reply because Sandhya came up to him with the contact details of the two security guards.

“Haul them in,” he ordered, all signs of humour vanishing from his face as it took on the same grim and forbidding look from earlier. “Now, what was it you wanted to ask Malti?”

“Of course! I almost forgot why we called her in,” said Sandhya.

CHAPTER10

DIGVIJAY

Sandhya sat down next to Malti and spoke to her gently.

“I’ve heard that you had something similar happen to you. Can you tell us about that?”

Malti’s eyes widened as she made the connection.

“Oh, yes. But that was a snake, not a chicken.”

“But the circumstances were similar?” pressed Sandhya.

Malti nodded doubtfully.

“Maybe. I found a dead snake in my bedroll one night when I unrolled the mattress to spread it on the ground. At first, I thought it had crept into my bedroll and died there. But it had been killed.”

“Just like my chicken,” Tasha cried out and then flushed brightly when she saw the way everyone was staring at her.

“So, sue me! I feel a kinship with that chicken now,” she said defiantly. “Sorry, Malti. Please continue.”

“Someone had smashed its head in and dumped it inside my bedroll, and I know exactly who did it,” she declared.

We all leaned forward in our seats, eager to know whom she suspected.

“That yoga master,” said Malti, with relish. She was enjoying the attention.

“Vishal Agarwal? I can’t believe it,” exclaimed Tasha.

I held up a hand.

“Hold on! Let’s hear her out. Sorry, please go on.”

Malti wiped her brow with her sleeve and went on with her story.

“It had to be him. I found him peeking into my room one night and threatened to report him. He apologised and ran away, but the very next night, I found a snake in my bedroll. Who else could it be?”

“Why didn’t you complain about the peeping?” asked Freddy. “I won’t stand for such behaviour from my staff.”

Malti shook her head.

“It was his word against mine, Sahab, and I’m just a maid.”

“That doesn’t matter, Malti. If anyone harasses you or any of the staff again, come straight to me. I’ll fix it,” promised Freddy gently.

Malti nodded and shot him a grateful smile.

“Does he have any reason to bear a grudge against you, Tasha?” asked Freddy.

Tasha made a face.
