“I don’t believe you, DV. You see, I know you’re not obsessed with me. Not the way you mean. Because this is all a game to you. You’re not here to win me back or anything. You’re here because you want to teach me a lesson, aren’t you? Because I dared to break off our betrothal. I humiliated you by leaving you, and now you’re getting back at me.”

“If I only wanted to humiliate you, why would I try to kill you, baby?” I asked.

“Because it’s not enough anymore,” she said simply. “Just humiliating me isn’t enough. Not after Inspector Sawant made that statement. You didn’t want him to do that. I could sense how upset you were.”

“I didn’t. It wasn’t a very smart thing to do,” I replied coldly.

“That’s why you threw that vase at my head,” she stated.

She didn’t give me a chance to say anything.

“You’re going to walk away from me now, DV. I know you won’t hurt me with witnesses around,” she said, waving her hand at the waitstaff in the dining area.

“Tasha, wait. Don’t do this…”

“No,” she said sharply. “If you take one step closer to me, I will scream the place down, DV. Just go away.”

I could barely nod at her as I struggled to keep my fury in check.

“You’re making a mistake, Tasha. I didn’t try to kill you. I was downstairs when the vase fell on you. There was a man with me, an employee of the commune. Ask him if you don’t believe me. He gave me the password to the local Wi-Fi network.”

“Maybe you’re right. But to prove it, I will have to walk back to the deserted community centre with you, and what is to stop you from completing the job once we get there? I’m sure it won’t be too difficult for a trained assassin like you. Sorry, DV. I choose not to die today,” she said, with a snide smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

“Tasha, if I walk away now, this is the end. There’s no coming back from something like this,” I warned.

“I hope not,” she quipped unpleasantly.

Then she waved at someone who came up behind me.

“Hi, Sandhya! DV was just leaving for some work. Do you want to have a cup of tea at my cottage?”

Sandhya smiled at us warmly, not reading the undercurrents between us.

“Sure! Do you want me to order some lunch, as well?”

“Maybe later. I’m just dying for some chai,” replied Tasha, as she walked away with a cheerful wave at me.

CHAPTER21

TASHA

Iwalked away from DV at a brisk pace, with a fake smile plastered across my face.

“Are you okay?” whispered Sandhya as she kept pace with me.

I shook my head once.

“Do you need me to call someone? Your cousin, maybe?”

I took in a deep shuddering breath.

“No. No, thank you. I’ll be fine. As soon as I get that cup of tea,” I replied, with another fake smile.

“You really should eat something, Tasha. You’ve been out all day, and it’s way past lunchtime. I haven’t eaten either. How about I pick up something for both of us?”

Ugh! How could she think of food at a time like this? But I couldn’t expect her to starve for my sake.

“Sure. Do you want me to call the community kitchen?”
